About Ptarmigan Lake

Ptarmigan Lake is a scenic alpine destination in Chaffee County, reached by a well-maintained three-mile hike through shaded forest that opens up to a stunning mountain basin. Located near the town of Buena Vista, this lake rewards hikers with clear water and views of the surrounding Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. The trail passes several smaller lakes along the way, so keep going until you reach the larger main lake at the end for the full experience.

The hike to Ptarmigan Lake is rated moderate and covers roughly six miles round trip. Most of the trail winds through dense forest with good shade, making it comfortable even on warm summer days. Families and visitors still adjusting to Colorado's altitude find it approachable, though the elevation gain provides enough challenge to feel rewarding. The parking area fills up quickly, especially on weekends, so arriving early is key. Overflow parking spills onto the road shoulders, which can make the trailhead area congested by mid-morning.

Fishing at Ptarmigan Lake gives anglers a chance to sight-cast to trout in clear alpine water. Visitors report watching trout swimming near the surface, making this a fun spot for fly fishing or light spinning gear. The main lake holds the best fishing, though the smaller ponds along the trail can also be worth a few casts. A smaller secondary lake sits on the east side of the main lake for those wanting to explore further.

The trail to Ptarmigan Lake is dog-friendly, making it a popular choice for hikers with four-legged companions. Along the route, you will pass through wildflower meadows that peak in mid-summer, and the forest offers good conditions for mushroom hunting during late summer rains. The trees thin out as you approach the lake, opening up panoramic views of the basin.

At the trailhead, take the trail that crosses the stream rather than the path behind the restrooms to stay on the correct route. A vault restroom is available at the parking area. Ptarmigan Lake is best visited from late June through September, when the trail is snow-free and wildflowers are at their peak. For hikers looking to extend the trip, a ridge above the lake offers additional views for those willing to scramble higher.

Good hike for lowlanders who have not acclimatized to altitude. Tough enough to be rewarding but achievable. A little crowded. Parking lot was full and people were parking on the shoulder of the road.

Great hike. 3 miles from car to the lake. Beautiful scenery.

Great hike! Mostly shaded with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the forest. Get there early for good parking. (Take the trail across the stream - not behind the restrooms) The trees thin out near the lakes and they are beautiful! Note: the big lake is the final destination unless you just want to go up to the ridge. There is another, smaller lake on the east side of the big lake.

Great hike for the family. Trail is very well maintained, can be a great spot for mushroom hunting if you pick the right time! Great wildflowers along the trail as well.

Fun, dog friendly moderate hike. You pass several small lakes before you get to Lake Ptarmigan, so don't stop and turn around too soon.
