About Boss Lake Reservoir

Boss Lake Reservoir is a stunning high-alpine reservoir in Chaffee County, Colorado, that rewards hikers and anglers with pristine water, spectacular mountain views, and a genuine sense of wilderness. Rated 4.9 stars by visitors, this lake sits at significant elevation in the Sawatch Range and demands effort to reach, making it one of those Colorado destinations that feels truly earned when you arrive.

The primary route to Boss Lake involves a challenging hike that visitors describe as not for the faint of heart. The trail is largely unmaintained and can be unstable, with loose rocks dislodged by mountain bikers adding to the difficulty. The final section near the dam is steep and treacherous but short. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles can shorten the approach to roughly a mile from the lake, though the road is rough terrain with a risk of high-centering on the initial hill. Many visitors prefer hiking the full access road rather than driving, both for the workout and to preserve the wild character of the mountain.

Fishing at Boss Lake Reservoir is the top draw for many visitors. The reservoir holds a healthy population of cutthroat trout, and anglers report catching fish on their first visits. Regulations here are strict: no bait allowed, catch and release only. These rules help maintain the quality fishery that makes the difficult approach worthwhile. The shoreline is steep in many places, so finding accessible casting spots requires some scouting. Bring appropriate gear for cutthroat trout and be prepared to work the banks carefully.

The views from Boss Lake are described by visitors as insane and spectacular. The surrounding Sawatch Range peaks create a dramatic amphitheater around the reservoir, and the hike in provides beautiful panoramas along the way. The lake itself is pristine and clear, making it a perfect spot for a trailside picnic before heading back down. Surprisingly, cell service is available at the lake itself, which is unusual for such a remote alpine setting.

Boss Lake Reservoir is best visited in summer and early fall once snow has melted from the access road and trail. Mountain bikers share the trail, so stay alert for fast-moving riders on the descent. This is a hike-in destination, so pack everything you need including water, food, and sun protection. For anglers and hikers seeking a high-alpine experience away from the crowds, Boss Lake Reservoir delivers one of the most rewarding day trips in the Chaffee County high country.

Four wheel accessible to the trail head only. Very rough terrain but doable in a proper vehicle, watch out for high centering on the initial hill. Hiking the access road is actually better to do to the trail head than four wheeling, keeps the mountain "wild" instead of over trekked by machines. Beautiful lake and worth the hike, but not for the faint of heart. The trail is mostly not maintained, and there are a ton of bikers bombing the hills loosing rocks so the trail is unstable. The last segment at the dam is treacherous but short. Fishes well, no bait allowed, catch and release only.

If you have a high clearance four wheel drive you can drive to within about a mile at the lake. There a lot of cutthroat trout in this Lake. It's very steep around the lake so some of the shoreline could be difficult to access.
