About Hartenstein Lake

Hartenstein Lake lies at the end of a steep three-mile climb from the Denny Creek trailhead in Chaffee County. Nearly the entire approach is uphill, with reviewers estimating that 2.8 of the 3 miles involve steady ascending over loose, chunky rock. The payoff is an alpine lake surrounded by rugged mountain scenery, dense forest, and the kind of silence that only remote high-country terrain can deliver.

The trail begins with a well-defined path and reaches the first water crossing exactly one mile from the parking area. From there, the grade steepens and the footing becomes rougher. Hikers report needing micro spikes during early season when hard-packed snow lingers on exposed sections. The first downhill stretch signals you are close to the lake. Expect a workout: this hike is consistently described as not for the faint of heart, but the return trip is fast and easy since it is almost entirely downhill.

Wildlife is a major draw at Hartenstein Lake. Visitors report moose sightings, with one group describing three moose that stayed near camp throughout the night. Dogs should be kept on leash given the presence of large wildlife and marshy terrain near the shore. Bug spray is also considered essential, especially during the summer months when mosquitoes are heavy near the water.

The lake itself sits in a dramatic cirque with limited shoreline access. Much of the bank is marsh or choked with downed trees, and there is no established trail circling the water. Fishing is possible but challenging without waders due to the difficult shoreline conditions. A few primitive camping spots exist on the east and west sides of the lake, offering level ground and proximity to the water.

Hartenstein Lake is best suited for experienced hikers who enjoy a strenuous climb with a high-altitude reward. Pack food, a book, and enough layers to handle the wind and chill that reviewers consistently mention at the top. The views from the lake are described as spectacular, making this one of Chaffee County's most rewarding backcountry day hikes or overnight trips.

Great views. Pretty good hike as well. It was windy and chilly. Fun to hike, trail was pretty clear. Hard snow in a few places. Better to carry Micro spikes.

Burn off those calories! Hike to lake from Denny Creek trailhead is not for the faint of heart. It's uphill 96‰ makes going back down easy though. When going to lake, when you get your first downhill section of trail you're very close. Very loose rock, really chunk trail. Also. I don't advise trying to go around the lake, much of the shore around lake is marsh, and the areas that aren't marsh is laden with down trees. There is not much of any sort of trail around lake. A few cool camping spots to the east and west sides, but not many. Bring bug spray, and keep your dog on the leash. Exactly 1 mile to first water crossing on trail from cars, almost spot on 3 miles at the lake itself. 2.8miles of this hike is uphill. Fishing good spots would be difficult at this lake without waiters
