About Billings Lake

Billings Lake is a secluded alpine lake tucked high into the mountains of Chaffee County, reached by a 12-mile 4WD road that winds through some of the most stunning backcountry scenery in central Colorado. If you want a Colorado lake experience that feels earned, Billings Lake delivers. The rough road filters out casual traffic and rewards those who make the drive with wildflower-covered meadows, moose sightings, and a glassy mountain lake surrounded by peaks and silence.

Fishing at Billings Lake centers on cutthroat trout, the native species that thrive in these high-elevation waters. The cutthroats here are finicky and selective, so fly fishing is the most productive approach. Bring a variety of dry flies and nymphs, and expect to work for your catch. The lake is small enough to fish from shore, and the lack of boat ramp or developed access means you will be casting from the banks or wading the shallows. For anglers who enjoy the challenge of fooling wild trout in a pristine alpine setting, Billings Lake is exactly the kind of water worth seeking out.

The drive itself is half the adventure. The first six miles of the road are moderate and passable for most stock 4WD vehicles with decent clearance. The second half becomes rockier and more technical, though experienced drivers in Jeeps, trucks, or side-by-sides report managing it without difficulty. Plan on at least an hour each way for the drive, and longer if you stop to photograph the wildflowers, scan the treeline for moose, or simply take in the panoramic mountain views that open up along the route.

Free dispersed camping is available at unimproved sites near the lake, but expect competition for the best spots on summer weekends. Late June through early September is peak season, and the most desirable lakeside sites fill fast. Weekday visits or shoulder-season trips offer far more solitude. There are no facilities at Billings Lake. No restrooms, no potable water, no trash service. Pack everything in and pack everything out. OHV and side-by-side riders also use the road as a trail ride destination, so expect some vehicle traffic on busy weekends.

The combination of a challenging approach, wild cutthroat trout, free dispersed camping, and genuine backcountry solitude makes Billings Lake one of Chaffee County's most rewarding off-grid destinations. Come prepared for the road, bring your fly rod, and give yourself enough time to soak in the quiet.

It had been a few years since I drove up to the lake and mine. Simple trail, easily driven by most stock 4x4

Amazing views, so quiet. Long slow bumpy ride but so beautiful along the way. So many colorful flowers and we seen a Moose hiding in the trees. Just gorgeous and secluded.

Great views, no crowds, fishing.

Great spot, but not as far off the beaten path as one might hope. The road requires 4wd and clearance, but was busy on the last weekend in June and all of the best unimproved campsites were taken. The lake has some finicky cutthroat trout, but they will take the right fly.

Basic 4wd will make it. Great easy trip in our Jeep. Beautiful scenery and well worth the time. 12 miles, 2nd half is more rocky than first but still an easy drive.
