About Capote Lake

Capote Lake is a small, scenic fishing lake on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation in Archuleta County, framed by a striking rock formation that visitors affectionately call "Pride Rock." Managed by the Southern Ute tribe, the lake offers a relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff, clean facilities, and reliable fishing that keeps families and solo anglers coming back year after year.

Fishing at Capote Lake is the main draw, and reviewers consistently report good catches. Catfish and trout are among the species pulled from these waters, with several visitors noting they caught enough for a fish fry the same evening. One major perk: a tribal fishing permit covers your access without requiring a Colorado state fishing license, making it an easy option for casual anglers and families with children. Fishing docks provide convenient access for those who prefer not to cast from shore, and the sheltered bay area offers additional bank fishing spots.

Camping at Capote Lake is described as quiet and quaint, with sites suitable for tents and small trailers. Campsites include fire rings, and at least some sites offer water and electric hookups for around $20 per night. Reviewers praise the campground bathrooms as extremely clean, which is a rarity at many Colorado lake campgrounds. Shade trees are available at several spots around the lake, a welcome feature on sunny summer days.

The lake sits in a beautiful high-desert landscape with spectacular views of the surrounding rock formations and open sky. Visitors describe it as a peaceful escape with plenty of room to spread out, even noting that it rarely feels crowded. Several reviewers mention spending hours just sitting under a tree and relaxing by the water.

Because Capote Lake is on tribal land, access is managed by the Southern Ute Indian Reservation and may be subject to seasonal closures or tribal restrictions. The lake was closed to non-tribal members during certain COVID-19 periods, so checking current access policies before making the drive is recommended. Day-use permits are available for those who just want to fish without camping. Staff members, particularly a well-loved employee named Gale, receive consistent praise for being welcoming and helpful.

Made reservations for 3 days but the only allowed us 2 days and said over booked but we asked if we could go to another spot and a lady said no but when we asked a difference guy employee he said they weren’t even booked out and we could move to another spot but she was rude so we decided to leave . When our native friend came then she treated us well I don’t know if she was native as well or what but not cool . Would rate them high the lake was super nice and fun I just think native people don’t like outsiders on their lakes idk

I love this lake I have a small child I can pay just for the day and not worry about a license! I call this pride rock lake because of the great rock formation in the background. I also love that they have docks you can fish off of or just right there off the bay I also like that they have quaint campgrounds if you have tensor trailer and the bathrooms for these facilities are extremely clean good job Capote lake.
