About Buckles Lake

Buckles Lake sits in the forested high country of Archuleta County in southwestern Colorado, reached by an easy hike through some of the most scenic aspen groves in the San Juan Mountains. The trail is short and manageable, making this a popular fall destination when the aspens turn gold and the surrounding old-growth forest puts on one of the region's best color displays. Visitors consistently describe the hike and the lake setting as peaceful, serene, and visually striking.

The lake itself has diminished in size over the years and now functions more as a large pond than a true lake. Fishing is not productive here. Visitors who arrive with rods report no success, and the water appears to serve primarily as a watering hole for cattle that graze in the surrounding national forest allotments. Anyone planning a fishing trip should set expectations accordingly and consider Buckles Lake as a scenic hiking destination rather than an angling spot.

The surrounding forest is ancient and dense, filled with hundreds of downed trees that give the landscape a wild, untouched character. Several reviewers note the heavy fuel load with concern, observing that a wildfire in this area would burn intensely and for a long time. The old-growth trees and deadfall create a dramatic backdrop, but they also mean the terrain off-trail is difficult to navigate.

The mountain drive to the trailhead is a highlight in its own right, with sweeping views of the San Juan range and surrounding valleys. Fall is the peak season here, with aspen viewing drawing the most visitors, but summer offers green canopy and wildflowers along the trail. Winter access is likely limited by snow on the approach roads.

Buckles Lake is best suited for hikers, nature walkers, and photographers looking for an easy trail with a high scenic payoff. The combination of old-growth forest, aspen groves, and a quiet mountain pond makes this one of Archuleta County's most rewarding short hikes. Leave the fishing gear at home and bring a camera instead.

So beautiful. Hundreds of down trees. Old old forest. Hopefully no forest fire cause it would burn along time. Very beautiful!!!!

Great hike in but not a fishing lake. it's more of a pond now. Great mountain drive with awesome views. We went to try fishing but no luck. it seems to be a watering hole for the cattle that graze.
