About Opal Lake

Opal Lake sits at roughly 9,180 feet in Archuleta County, reached by a 2.1-mile trail that gains about 500 feet from the trailhead near Pagosa Springs. The lake itself is small and mountain-fed, with a distinctive greenish color that stands out against the surrounding alpine meadow and dense aspen groves. A stream feeds into and flows out of the lake, creating a calming soundtrack for hikers who settle in along the banks. Ducks, geese, and other wildlife frequent the shoreline, and at least one reviewer confirmed fish are present in the water.

The hike to Opal Lake begins with a steep initial climb that lasts about three-quarters of a mile and feels like a stair-stepper at elevation. After that opening push, the trail levels out and weaves through some of the largest and most impressive aspen groves in the Pagosa Springs area. Fall visits are particularly rewarding when the aspens turn gold and the surrounding peaks provide a dramatic backdrop for photography. Wildflowers line the trail in summer, and winter hikers encounter snow, slush, and muddy conditions that add challenge but also solitude.

The round trip covers roughly three miles and takes most hikers between one and a half to two hours, though altitude affects pace for visitors coming from lower elevations. Children as young as five have completed the trail, and families with kids between five and sixteen report it is manageable with some effort. Several stream crossings require hopping across rocks or walking over laid logs, so sturdy hiking shoes are essential. Flip-flops and casual footwear will not work on the rocky, root-covered trail, especially after rain when the path turns muddy and slick.

The trailhead has parking for about 15 cars and a vault restroom, though hikers should bring their own toilet paper. No trash cans are provided, so pack-out rules apply. There are no picnic tables at the trailhead, but flat areas nearby work for camp chairs after the hike. Rangers staff the trailhead during peak summer weekends to answer questions and check that hikers are prepared. The access road to the trailhead is a long county gravel road, rough and rocky in sections, and takes approximately an hour to drive from the main highway. The scenery along the drive is worth stopping for as well.

The trail is dog-friendly and also welcomes horses. Free-range cattle may appear along the route. Bug spray is recommended, as insects are active in the forested sections. The trail is well maintained and well marked, making navigation straightforward. Opal Lake rewards hikers with a peaceful alpine setting, stunning aspen canopies, and mountain views in every direction. It is a must-visit destination for anyone spending time near Pagosa Springs who wants a moderate trail with a memorable payoff at the end.

My favorite in the area, trail is well maintained and stunning. Very clean restroom too! Perfect little hike with a dog, took me about 2hrs. Gravel road up is long and rough in some areas, but manageable.

Trailhead was nice. Long drive on county roads to get there. There is a latrine at the trailhead so ladies bring toilet paper. Parking for about 15 cars I’d say. We got there around 11am which is a late start and we had 2 cars and could find a parking spot. Great hike, steep for maybe .6 miles to start the completely levels off incredible Aspen grocers and lake itself is great.

Fantastic views in this small mountain lake! Absolutely gorgeous! Trail was in good condition at the time of this writing. It can be steep at times and be prepared to cross a few streams via ground laid logs or hop across using rocks. Also consider the altitude and how acclimated you are to it. Bring water and maybe an energy bar or trail mix for an energy boost for the hike back. I can't wait until the next time I hike this trail!
