About Trout Lake

Trout Lake rests at about 9,700 feet along the San Juan Skyway near Telluride in San Miguel County, surrounded by snow-capped alpine peaks that reviewers frequently compare to the Swiss Alps. The lake is a 15-minute drive from Telluride Mountain Village and accessible directly from Highway 145, making it a convenient stop for travelers driving the scenic byway between Telluride and Durango. Fall visits are especially popular, when golden aspens frame the lake against early-season snow on the surrounding ridgelines.

Fishing at Trout Lake lives up to the name. Anglers report catching limits of rainbow trout from shore, with one reviewer landing 11 trout in a single hour using powerbait on a slip weight. The lake was built for boat fishing, so shore access can be limited in spots, but patient bank anglers still find productive water. The trout tend to run smaller but bite frequently, making this a rewarding spot for casual fishing outings and family trips.

Paddleboarding and kayaking dominate the water during summer months. The calm, clear surface and 360-degree mountain views make Trout Lake one of the most photographed paddling destinations in southwestern Colorado. Early morning sessions before other visitors arrive offer glasslike conditions and near-total solitude. Canoeing is also popular, and the lake's manageable size means paddlers can explore the entire shoreline in a couple of hours. The water stays cold through summer, consistent with other high-elevation San Juan lakes.

Swimming is possible but uncommon due to water temperature. A few visitors report jumping in, and dogs are welcome in the water. The lake sees plenty of picnickers who set up chairs along the shore to take in the scenery without getting wet. A public restroom is available near the lake access point, but amenities beyond that are minimal, so visitors should bring all supplies including food, water, and sun protection.

The Hope Lake Trail starts a short drive from Trout Lake and climbs to a high alpine lake at 12,000 feet. Reviewers describe it as moderately difficult, taking three to six hours round trip, and one of the most beautiful hikes in the area. The road circling Trout Lake continues into alpine forest on a bumpy double-track that eventually reconnects with Highway 145 at Lizard Head Pass. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended from late November through early May due to heavy snowfall, and drivers should avoid attempting to cross snow barriers without serious off-road capability. Parking is limited at the lake, so arriving early on summer weekends secures a spot. Wildlife sightings include Canada geese and beaver, and the surrounding peaks create some of the most dramatic reflection photography in Colorado.

While driving, I passed by Trout Lake again—gorgeous as ever. I wanted to paddleboard there, but it was still too cold.

Looks out of the world due to the calm and serenity all around . The blue hue of the water and sky above makes it look incredible with the surrounding mountains . Majestic and gorgeous it is and won’t fail to capture your heart . Been during the summers and loved it totally . I am highly looking forward to revisit during fall. There are hiking trails and public toilets as well .

One of the most amazing place to visit in Telluride. Such a rare combination of gazing the beauty of snowy peaks, tranquil lake and mesmerizing fall color in a single frame. Do not miss this place during your fall color visit in Telluride.

It’s indeed a beautiful lake and setting although one should be aware that there are very few places for parking so get there early. The Trout Lake trestle is also a great place to park for hiking but is about 3/4 mile down the road from the lake beach.

Trout Lake is my favorite paddleboard spot of all time. I visit during the summer months, and I always look forward to it. Fishing is a blast here, too. This is a highlight to any trip, and definitely worth the travel time. Not too busy either, and has great areas to explore as well.

We saw Trout Lake on a map and decided to give fishing it a try. It was an hour drive from Delores, CO and at about 9700’ elevation. Beautiful little lake built for boat fishing. Shore fishing is a little more difficult, but we found a decent spot and the fish were biting! The fish weren’t big, mostly rainbows, but a lot of fun to catch. We got our limit and had to throw some back for being too small. Lots of people were paddle boarding and kayaking. We will definitely be going back there when we’re in the area.
