About Miramonte Reservoir

Miramonte Reservoir spreads across 405 surface acres of high desert south of Norwood in San Miguel County, and visitors who make the drive out here consistently say the same thing — this might be the most beautiful lake in Colorado that most people have never heard of. Sitting at roughly 7,700 feet within the Dan Noble State Wildlife Area, Miramonte delivers free camping, solid trout fishing, and sunsets that reviewers describe as unforgettable.

Fishing is the main draw. The reservoir supports healthy populations of cutbow trout, brown trout, and rainbow trout, with fish commonly reaching 20 inches and occasional catches exceeding six pounds. Shore fishing produces results along the expansive shoreline, and two boat ramps on the eastern side give anglers with watercraft full access to deeper water. Crawdad trapping has also become a popular activity, with visitors reporting excellent catches using simple traps. A valid Colorado fishing or hunting license, or a State Wildlife Area pass, is required for anyone 16 and older.

Camping at Miramonte is free and primitive. Dispersed sites ring the reservoir, with enough room for tents, RVs, trailers, and boats. There are no hookups and no reservation system — you pick a spot and settle in. Vault toilets and basic parking areas are the extent of developed amenities. Many families spend multiple days here, combining fishing with hiking, OHV riding on nearby trails, and evenings spent watching the sun drop behind the San Juan Mountains to the south.

The landscape around Miramonte is open and treeless near the water, which means two things: panoramic views in every direction and wind that can arrive without warning. Reviewers mention wind repeatedly, and it can affect both fishing and comfort. Bring stakes for your tent, windbreaks for your camp, and be prepared to adjust your casting approach on breezy days.

Miramonte Reservoir works best from late spring through early fall. Summer weekends bring modest crowds, but the reservoir's size absorbs visitors easily. The combination of free access, quality trout fishing, and Western Colorado solitude makes Miramonte a destination that rewards the extra miles it takes to get here.

This is pretty nice free boondock camping, but there are a few outhouses. We usually go for a few days, and enjoy hiking and 4 wheeling.

Lake Miramonte in Colorado. Fishing is good, I use shrimp. Wildlife is fantastic. Only drawback for me is it gets quite windy.

Hot and pretty desolate. The fishing over Labor Day weekend was horrible. The people that were on boats and fishing the shore wasn't ketching anything. I never saw one person catch a fish. There were a lot of crawdads and people were using traps to catch them, and were doing well.
