About Elk Head Reservoir

Elk Head Reservoir is a scenic state park destination in Routt County, Colorado, located roughly 15 minutes from the town of Craig. Known for its wide-open high-desert landscape, the reservoir draws visitors who want uncrowded water recreation, solid camping facilities, and sweeping nighttime skies. The lake reached full pool by early June in recent seasons, making late spring through summer the prime window for boating, swimming, and shoreline relaxation.

Swimming is a popular activity at Elk Head Reservoir, with a sand beach area that visitors praise for its family-friendly atmosphere and covered picnic tables nearby. Paddleboarding is a standout draw here, with multiple reviewers highlighting the reservoir as a top spot for SUP sessions. Kayaking and canoeing are possible, though reviewers note that wind can pick up significantly in the basin, so morning paddles are a safer bet. Motorized boating is permitted, and the park provides a two-lane boat ramp for easy launching. Bass fishing and pike fishing both produce catches, with reviewers reporting smallmouth bass and northern pike landed from boats on the reservoir.

The Pronghorn campground is the most frequently recommended camping area, offering well-spaced sites with electric hookups at 50, 30, and 20 amp service, covered picnic shelters at each site, fire rings, and large tent pads. The Bears Ears campground provides a more basic experience with no electric hookups. Both campgrounds sit close to the water but have no shade trees, which matters during the hot summer months typical of this part of northwestern Colorado. Vault toilets are available throughout the park, and reviewers consistently note they are kept clean. There is no potable water, no dump station, and no showers anywhere in the park, so campers should fill water tanks and plan waste disposal in Craig before arriving.

Hiking and biking trails wind throughout the state park, giving visitors options for land-based exploration. An archery range at Greenwood Cove offers both static targets and a 3D course. Wildlife sightings include deer walking through campsites and coyotes calling at night. The park charges a seven-dollar daily vehicle pass, with campsites running around eighteen dollars per night. Reservations are now required for camping and can be made online. Cellular service is weak to nonexistent across the park, so plan accordingly. ADA-accessible concrete pads are available in the campground, though wheelchair access around the broader lakeshore is limited.

This was a very clean state park with a beautiful reservoir! There is no water available at all at this park! Or dump station!

Everything very dry feels like dessert. Not the kind of place I like for camping.

Nice gravel roads all around to get to the different areas of the Reservoir. Went in July.. So there was some light rain and somewhat gusty winds that messed with one of our tents. We'll kept grounds and park rangers visiting the site areas.

Nice lake but fishing not good. Nice campground but no water or dump. Had to go to Craig and dump at the fairgrounds. Very hot temp and no shade. Could be a nice campground with a few improvements.

Very nice State Park. Clean bathrooms. Campsites looked nice. The staff at the front gate was very helpful. Nice hiking around the reservoir. It would be fun to camp and paddle and fish there.

No showers, no water, no pump station and no joy...this res looks like it's being improved with the boom by the spill way and other things going on. Don't be fooled this park is the same dry, hot, no trees place it always has been. Great for day use or for some one with no reservations on a three day weekend...otherwise go to one of the better campgrounds you probably will drive past on your way here...
