About Weller Lake

Weller Lake is a clear alpine lake perched in the mountains near Aspen in Pitkin County, accessible via one of the shortest and most rewarding hikes along Independence Pass. The out-and-back trail takes just 15 to 20 minutes at a relaxed pace, making it an ideal stop for travelers driving over the pass who want to stretch their legs and experience a genuine mountain lake without committing to a long trek.

The trail climbs through a forested corridor of switchbacks that provide consistent shade, a welcome feature during summer months. While the path is steep in places, visitors consistently rate it as an easy hike that families with children can handle comfortably. The tree cover gives way to open alpine terrain at the lake, where mountain views reward hikers with a dramatic change of scenery. A stream runs alongside portions of the trail, adding to the atmosphere on the way up.

Weller Lake itself is deep, cold, and remarkably clear — multiple visitors note it as one of the clearest lakes in the Aspen area. The shoreline is rocky and boulder-strewn, which makes accessing the water's edge challenging but creates opportunities for bouldering and scrambling. Fishing is recommended by visitors who praise the deep, clean water, though getting a good casting position requires navigating the rocks. The rocky terrain around the lake also provides plenty of space for exploration and photos, though footing can be tricky.

This is a popular trail, and visitors looking for solitude should be aware that Weller Lake sees steady foot traffic, especially during peak summer and fall foliage season. Mosquitoes are a persistent issue near the lake, so bug spray or covering up is strongly recommended. Some dead trees line the lower trail sections, but the scenery at the lake more than compensates.

Weller Lake is best visited during summer and early fall when Independence Pass is open. The autumn leaf season brings spectacular color to the surrounding forest. The combination of a short approach, stunning alpine scenery, and easy access from the main road makes Weller Lake one of the best quick hikes near Aspen for visitors of all fitness levels.

Nice hike that is short but all uphill.

Nice short hike to a pretty lake. Water very cold. But it's one of the clearer water lakes near Aspen. Trees kinda dead on the hike up. Lake makes the hike worth it. Love that the water is clean

Easy hike, beautiful spot. A lot of rocks around lake, so challenging if trying to get a picture, but easy hike to lake. Lots of mosquitoes so cover up or have bug spray!

This out and back trail takes you up to Weller lake. Lot of switchbacks to get up there but worth the effort. Despite going up this is not a hard hike, we did it with kids and they were just fine. Nice mountain views once you get up to the Lake with plenty of space to explore, climb and enjoy.

Best short, easy walk/hike around Aspen. Max 20 minutes at the slowest pace, and the view at the top is great.

What an excellent hike through the forest and up the mountain. Very simple, peaceful, and the lake is very calming and relaxing view. Difficult to get to the water and shore line, but Deep and clear. Highly recommend for fishing.

The hike is great, because you are mostly tree covered which provides you with shade. The hike itself is pretty easy, but steep in some sections. Very easy hike for the reward of a very beautiful alpine lake.
