About Chapman Reservoir

Chapman Reservoir is a remote, high-country reservoir tucked into the upper Frying Pan River valley in Pitkin County, Colorado. With a near-perfect 4.9-star rating and a setting that feels worlds away from the bustle of nearby Aspen, this small reservoir rewards visitors who make the drive with peaceful camping, solid fishing, and cool mountain temperatures that provide welcome relief on hot summer days.

Fishing is a primary draw at Chapman Reservoir, with anglers finding good action along the shoreline and in the surrounding Frying Pan River, one of Colorado's most celebrated trout fisheries. The reservoir's location in the upper Frying Pan drainage means cold, clear water that supports healthy trout populations. Whether you are casting from the bank or exploring the river upstream and downstream of the reservoir, this is productive water for anyone with a rod and a Colorado fishing license.

The campground at Chapman Reservoir offers sites along the Frying Pan River with clean restroom facilities. Weekday visits are especially rewarding, as the campground is quiet and rarely full. Weekends draw more visitors, and sites can fill up, so arriving early on Friday or reserving ahead is wise if you are planning a weekend trip. The campground provides a solid base for exploring the broader Frying Pan Valley, which is dotted with additional reservoirs, trails, and fishing access points.

One of the most distinctive features at Chapman Reservoir is its historic concrete dam, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. The CCC-era structure adds a layer of historical interest to an already scenic spot. A trail around part of the reservoir provides a pleasant hike at elevation, where cooler temperatures and mountain views make for comfortable walking even in midsummer.

Chapman Reservoir is described by visitors as very remote, so come prepared with everything you need. Water system issues have been reported, so bringing your own drinking water is strongly recommended. Cell service is limited to nonexistent, and the nearest services are a significant drive away. This remoteness is precisely what makes Chapman Reservoir special: a quiet, unspoiled corner of the Colorado high country where you can fish, hike, and camp without the crowds that characterize more accessible destinations in the Roaring Fork Valley.

This is one of my top favorite spots to go camping! My boyfriend and I went for a weekend and it was so peaceful. Fishing is good, relaxing, hiking, everything was spectacular!

I loved having a campsite on the frying pan River! Bathrooms were clean. It was delightful during the week when hardly anyone was there. It does fill up in the weekends!

They're having problems with the water. So make sure you take what you need. Chances are they will be slow fixing it, you know how the government works.
