About Lake Emma

Lake Emma sits at the base of some of Colorado's most famous fourteeners in Park County, making it one of the most accessible alpine lake experiences along the Kite Lake corridor. If you have hiked the nearby peaks of Lincoln, Democrat, and Bross, you have likely spotted this gem shimmering below the treeline. If you have not, Lake Emma is the perfect place to start exploring this high-altitude playground near Alma.

The hike to Lake Emma covers roughly three-quarters of a mile with about 730 feet of elevation gain from the Kite Lake trailhead parking area. That short distance makes it a strong option for families, newer hikers, and anyone looking for a rewarding outing without committing to a full fourteener push. The trail crosses a creek early on, and experienced visitors recommend crossing to the far side for a more manageable ascent. Once you arrive, you will find not one but three lakes in the basin, each framed by rugged alpine ridgelines and scattered remnants of historic mining operations.

Wildflower season, typically from late June through early August, transforms the surrounding meadows into a patchwork of columbine, Indian paintbrush, and alpine sunflowers. Photographers and wildflower enthusiasts will find plenty of material here. The old mine ruins scattered across the hillsides add a layer of Colorado mining history that sets Lake Emma apart from other alpine lake hikes in the region.

Because of its elevation near 12,000 feet, Lake Emma is a seasonal destination. Snow typically blocks access from late October through May, and afternoon thunderstorms are common from July through September. Plan to start your hike early in the morning during summer months to avoid lightning exposure above treeline. The parking area at Kite Lake fills quickly on weekends during peak season, so arriving before 7 a.m. is a good strategy.

Lake Emma works well as a standalone half-day trip or as a scenic alternative for members of your group who want to enjoy the mountains without tackling a fourteener summit. Dogs are welcome on the trail, and the basin offers plenty of room to spread out for a picnic lunch with panoramic views of the Mosquito Range.

Beautiful short hike. Great views and there are actually 3 lakes. It is best to cross the creek and ascend on the other side of the creek. Nice wildflowers and remnants of old mines

This is the place to send your friends who don’t hike but would like to do something while you’re climbing Lincoln, Democrat, and Bross. It’s .75 miles and 730 vertical from the Kite Lake parking
