About Gibson Lake

Gibson Lake sits high above treeline in Park County, Colorado, rewarding hikers with a pristine alpine lake surrounded by wildflower meadows and rugged mountain scenery. Located near the Webster Pass area southwest of Denver, this backcountry destination draws visitors who want a genuine Colorado alpine experience without the crowds found at more well-known Front Range lakes.

The hike to Gibson Lake covers roughly 2.4 miles from the upper trailhead with about 1,500 feet of elevation gain, making it a moderately challenging outing that climbs quickly above timberline. Hikers should know that reaching the upper trailhead parking lot requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. Those driving a standard car or all-wheel-drive crossover should park at the lower lot near the Webster Pass fork, which adds approximately 1.5 miles each way but keeps your vehicle safe from rocky, rutted roads. The trail itself passes through some muddy sections near the top, so waterproof boots are worth packing.

Late July is the prime window for wildflowers along the Gibson Lake trail. Reviewers consistently call out the flower displays as the highlight of this hike, with alpine blooms blanketing the meadows in color as the trail climbs toward the lake. The scenery above timberline opens up to sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, and the lake itself sits in a dramatic cirque that makes the effort feel worthwhile.

Gibson Lake is primarily a hiking destination, though the area around the trailhead also supports dispersed camping for those who want to extend their trip. The high elevation and exposed terrain mean weather can change fast, so plan to start early and carry layers. Snow can linger into June, and afternoon thunderstorms are common throughout summer.

For hikers looking for a challenging but accessible alpine lake near Denver, Gibson Lake delivers stunning scenery, solitude, and one of Park County's best wildflower shows. The drive from Denver takes roughly two hours, making it a realistic day trip for strong hikers or a rewarding overnight for campers who want to explore the surrounding trails and passes.

Gibson Lake is an excellent high alpine hike close to Denver. From the main parking lot it’s a 2.42 miles hike with 1,500 vertical. If you don’t have a high clearance 4x4 park in the lower parking at the fork to Webster Pass which will add 1.5 miles one way but save your all wheel drive crossover or car from damage. The best part of the hike are all the wild flowers.

Gorgeous lake! You can park further down and hike up, but the trailhead requires a high clearance 4WD vehicle. The flowers were amazing in late July, but there are still a few muddy bogs near the top.
