About Timnath Reservoir

Timnath Reservoir sits just east of Fort Collins in Larimer County, offering a calm water escape along the northern Front Range. Fed by irrigation canals from the Cache la Poudre River, this plains reservoir provides a quieter alternative to the larger, more crowded Horsetooth Reservoir nearby. The setting is open grassland with sweeping views of the foothills to the west, and the well-maintained shoreline gives the area a clean, cared-for feel that visitors consistently praise.

Paddleboarding is the standout activity at Timnath Reservoir. The relatively sheltered water and manageable size make it a solid choice for SUP sessions, whether you are a beginner learning to balance or an experienced paddler looking for a mellow outing. Swimming is also popular during the warmer months, with visitors wading in to cool off from the summer heat that settles across the plains. Bring the dog along too, as four-legged swimmers are a common sight here.

Fishing access is available, though anglers should set realistic expectations. The fishery is limited primarily to wiper and carp, so this is not the destination for trout chasers. A day pass runs around ten dollars after Memorial Day, with an additional fifteen-dollar charge per licensed angler, which adds up for groups. Make sure to budget accordingly if you plan to cast a line.

The reservoir is managed with strict rules, and staff enforce them consistently. Alcohol is prohibited on the property, and management does not hesitate to involve authorities if regulations are not followed. Some visitors find the enforcement heavy-handed, while others appreciate the clean, orderly atmosphere it creates. Either way, know the rules before you arrive to avoid surprises.

Seasonal timing matters here. Summer weekends draw the biggest crowds, particularly after Memorial Day when the full fee schedule kicks in. Weekday mornings offer a more relaxed experience with fewer people on the water. The reservoir is accessible from Interstate 25 and sits within easy reach of Timnath and east Fort Collins, making it a convenient after-work destination for locals who want to get on the water without the drive into the canyon.

I was a garbage truck driver and we had this place as a stop towards the end of the route. There was a man that worked there, and he would let us (coworkers and I) jump in the resevoir to cool off. MADE OUR DAY!! We couldn't have been more grateful in the summer heat. A GREAT HUMAN!!

This place is so clean! There aren’t any fish, except wiper and carp. But the kids had fun. The stuff who run the shed are very kind. After Memorial Day, it will cost 10$ for a day pass and and additional 15$ PER FISHER. Yes. Per licensed fisher.

This place is insanely strict. Would give 0 stars if possible. We were unaware that alcohol was not allowed but when we were told to put it away we did. Next thing we know, Randy the property manager calls the cops on us. We were literally sitting by the water paddle boarding with our family, alcohol put away, and he still felt the need to narc on us to the cops! THE COPS! I have lived in Fort Collins my whole life and have never experienced something as silly as this. Also, the stairs to the water are extremely slippery and dangerous. Not safe, not fun. Would NOT recommend. Go up to horsetooth instead.

They’re doing a wonderful job on the reservoir shoring up the bank to prevent erosion
