About West Lake

West Lake in Larimer County is a small, well-loved campground lake managed by Larimer County Natural Resources, nestled in the foothills northwest of Fort Collins. Measuring less than a mile around its perimeter, this compact lake packs an outsized punch for campers, anglers, and paddlers who want a peaceful mountain-adjacent getaway without venturing deep into the backcountry.

Camping is the star attraction at West Lake. The campground is well-maintained, family-friendly, and consistently praised by returning visitors who book the same sites year after year. Both tent and RV camping are available, with pull-through sites that accommodate trailers up to 25 feet. Most campsites offer a direct view of the lake, and the campground has a dedicated attendant who keeps everything running smoothly. First-come, first-served sites are available alongside reservable spots, though snagging a walk-up site during peak summer weekends requires an early arrival.

Fishing at West Lake draws steady interest from front-range anglers looking for a quick trip. The lake is stocked and small enough to fish from nearly any point along the shoreline. A perimeter trail circles the entire lake, giving anglers easy access to every bank. Paddleboarding and kayaking are permitted, but swimming is not allowed. Life jackets are required for all paddlers, and the calm, protected water makes it a comfortable spot for beginners to practice their stroke.

The trail around West Lake is flat, scenic, and short enough for a family walk or a quick morning loop before breakfast at camp. Wildlife sightings are common — visitors report seeing deer, foxes, various bird species, and other foothill critters, especially in the early morning and evening hours. The day-use area provides a separate space for visitors who want to enjoy the lake without an overnight commitment.

West Lake sits at a moderate elevation in the Larimer County foothills, making it accessible from late spring through early fall. Cell service is available at the campground, which is a welcome bonus for remote workers who want to combine a camping trip with a few days of online work. The park typically opens in May and closes in late September or October, depending on weather.

For families, anglers, and anyone who values a quiet, well-run campground within easy reach of Fort Collins and the northern front range, West Lake is a reliable favorite that earns repeat visits.

Was a great, quiet camping spot. And was able to work online. Also lucked into a first come first serve spot that was a pull through. Seems like most spots have a good view of the lake. We stayed in campsite 32. Plenty of room for a 25 foot trailer.

This is an awesome small lake, less than a mile around. There's a great campground, a day use area and a trail around the entire perimeter. You can't swim in the lake, you can fish and paddle board or kayak (wear that life jacket!).

We are a bit biased because we run this park in the summer. We love the people and the critters and we hope to make it one of the best camping parks to come visit.
