About The Loch

The Loch is a pristine alpine lake inside Rocky Mountain National Park in Larimer County, reached by a 2.7-mile hike from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead. Sitting at over 10,000 feet elevation, this crystal-clear, turquoise lake is framed by dramatic granite cliffs, jagged peaks, and vibrant wildflowers in summer. Many hikers treat The Loch as a midpoint on the way to Lake of Glass and Sky Pond, but its hook-shaped shoreline and reflected mountain views make it a worthy destination on its own.

Hiking to The Loch from Glacier Gorge Trailhead covers about 5.4 miles round trip with roughly 1,000 feet of elevation gain. The trail passes Alberta Falls at just 0.8 miles in, giving hikers an early scenic reward before ascending through pine forests and rocky switchbacks. The route can also be accessed from the Bear Lake Trailhead, adding distance but offering a different perspective. The trail is well-maintained and clearly marked, though the terrain includes uneven surfaces and some steeper climbs in the final quarter mile. Hikers of all fitness levels complete the route, though the high elevation tires visitors not accustomed to altitude. Trekking poles and good footwear with traction are recommended year-round.

Winter hiking to The Loch draws visitors who find the snow-covered scenery even more spectacular than summer. The trail packs down with snow and ice, making microspikes essential for safe footing. Past The Loch toward Sky Pond, conditions become sketchier with loose and drifted snow. Spring visitors through early June encounter patches of snow and ice on the trail, and some hikers enjoy impromptu body sledding on melting snowfields. Summer brings wildflowers and warmer conditions, though afternoon thunderstorms develop quickly, so starting before lunch is strongly advised.

Fly fishing at The Loch targets rainbow and greenback cutthroat trout hybrids, with fish averaging around twelve inches. Anglers use both dry flies and submerged patterns with indicators, adding subtle motion to attract strikes. The clear water and mountain backdrop make fishing here a memorable experience. Kayaking has also been spotted on the lake, though carrying watercraft up the trail requires commitment.

Rocky Mountain National Park requires a timed-entry reservation to access the Glacier Gorge area. Reservations cost two dollars per vehicle and must be booked through the park website in advance. Visitors must enter during their reserved time window or risk being turned away. Parking is available at both Glacier Gorge Trailhead and Bear Lake Trailhead. The trail can be crowded, particularly on weekends and holidays, though The Loch sees fewer visitors than nearby Emerald Lake. Bug spray is recommended for comfortable viewing during warmer months, and hikers should bring plenty of water and snacks for the hour-and-a-half climb each way. A water filter provides backup hydration from the creek that parallels portions of the trail.

All time favorite hike. Bring plenty of snacks and water, it's a long hour and a half hike. High elevation will get you tired for sure.

This review pertains to mid-June 2025. The Loch is a breathtaking, crystal-clear alpine lake that is a hiking destination inside Rocky Mountain National Park. Fed by glacial runoff, the Loch is a serene highlight about ~2.7 miles along the trail from Glacier Gorge Trailhead. If you choose to venture beyond the Loch, the next lakes are 'The Lake of Glass' and 'Sky Pond'. Framed by dramatic granite cliffs and vibrant wildflowers, a photo of The Loch would look perfect framed on a postcard. Trail Details: I hiked to The Loch on June 18, 2025, via the most direct route from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead (9,180 feet). The trail is 2.7 miles one-way (5.4 miles round trip) with approximately 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Starting at the trailhead, you’ll pass the scenic Alberta Falls just 0.8 miles in, then ascend through pine forests and rocky switchbacks. The trail is definitely challenging, with uneven terrain and some steeper climbs including narrow switch-backs, but it’s manageable for hikers with reasonable fitness. In mid-June, you can expect mostly clear trails, although there may still be some patches of snow and ice. I recommend bringing microspikes and trekking poles for the icy sections. The tranquil waters of the Loch left me in awe, perfectly reflecting the jagged peaks above. The serene beauty of this hidden lake made the journey feel worthwhile. In my opinion, the Loch is definitely a hike worth taking in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Extraordinary spot we stopped at on the way to Sky Pond. First glimpse on our first day at the awe inspiring scenery at RMNP. Highly recommended.

Pour moi ça reste le meilleur lac du secteur, heureux que personne n'y prête attention!

Beautiful lake, and a lot fewer people than Emerald! (Go to both) Some snowy/slushy parts still early June, wear shoes with good traction

The view is a little similar to other lakes, not quite sure it worth the efforts to get here.
