About Pinewood Lake

Pinewood Lake is a small, peaceful reservoir nestled in the foothills of Larimer County, just a short drive from Loveland and close to the larger Carter Lake. Known for reliable rainbow trout fishing and a quieter atmosphere than its neighbor, Pinewood Lake attracts anglers, paddleboarders, campers, and families looking for an accessible mountain-adjacent escape without the long drive into the high country.

Fishing is the main draw at Pinewood Lake. Rainbow trout are the primary catch, and regulars report consistent success, often landing at least one fish per visit. The lake operates under a no-motorized-boats policy, which keeps the water calm and the environment quiet. Mornings are the best time to fish, as paddleboard traffic can increase after 10 AM on busy days and crowd the shoreline. Water levels fluctuate seasonally and have been reported as very low at times, which can affect fishing success.

Paddleboarding is popular on Pinewood Lake, taking advantage of the flat, motor-free water. The lake is small enough to explore in a single session but large enough to provide a satisfying paddle. Expect company on weekends, when the limited parking lot fills up and the lake sees heavier use from both paddleboarders and anglers.

A hiking loop trail surrounds the area with a mix of ups, downs, and flat stretches near the lake. The trail is manageable for toddlers and visitors still adjusting to Colorado's elevation. Views of the reservoir are pleasant, though proximity to a nearby road is noticeable. Spring conditions can be muddy, while summer offers good shade along portions of the trail. Deer are commonly spotted along the trail and through the campground, especially at night.

Camping is available at Pinewood Lake with both drive-in and walk-in sites. Walk-in sites open only during summer months and are set among pine trees with developed site amenities. Winter camping is also an option. The campground is well-maintained, with active rangers and clean vault toilets. A Larimer County parking pass is required and can be purchased online in advance. The pay station is located down at Carter Lake, not at the Pinewood Lake parking lot, so plan ahead. Picnic areas are available for day-use visitors.

Great place to camp even in the winter. Decent fishing. There’s some walk in sites only open in the summer that are in pine trees and have nice developments sites.

Do not go here at all costs. I think the water has some sort of virus in it, been sick for days.

This is a smallish sized lake that I like to fish. Almost always catch at least one rainbow. Usually quiet and peaceful because no motors are allowed. Only bummer is there hardly no shade around shore, so it can get warm pretty early in the day.
