About Nymph Lake

Nymph Lake is a small alpine lake nestled at roughly 9,700 feet in Rocky Mountain National Park in Larimer County, serving as the first scenic reward on the popular Bear Lake to Emerald Lake trail corridor. The half-mile uphill hike from the Bear Lake trailhead delivers visitors to a tranquil body of water blanketed in lily pads, framed by pine forest and mountain peaks, with a fairy-tale atmosphere that makes it one of the most photographed stops in the park.

Hiking to Nymph Lake is the primary activity, and the trail is classified as moderate due to a steady incline with grades reaching ten to twelve percent. The distance from the Bear Lake parking area is roughly half a mile, taking most visitors between twenty and thirty-five minutes depending on fitness level and altitude acclimation. The elevation presents a real challenge for visitors unaccustomed to mountain air, and multiple reviewers recommend taking short rest breaks on the ascent. The trail is well-maintained and clearly marked in summer and fall, though winter and early spring conditions require microspikes or winter boots as snow and ice cover both the trail and the frozen lake surface.

Nymph Lake sits along the chain of lakes that includes Dream Lake and Emerald Lake farther up the trail, plus a spur to Lake Haiyaha. Many hikers treat Nymph Lake as a brief rest stop before continuing higher, but the lake deserves its own appreciation. Lily pads cover much of the water surface during summer months, and salamanders inhabit the shallows. The surrounding pine trees provide shade and shelter, creating a quiet forest-enclosed feeling despite the trail's popularity. Ducks frequent the shore, and elk have been spotted along the trail leading to the lake.

Photography draws visitors at all hours, though early morning light produces the best reflections on the water and the most dramatic mountain backdrop. Sunrise hikes are particularly rewarding, with the peaks above catching the first light while mist still hangs over the lily pads. Late afternoon visits in autumn offer golden light and thinner crowds, though temperatures drop quickly after sunset at this elevation.

The Bear Lake trailhead parking lot serves as the staging area and fills early on summer weekends. Rocky Mountain National Park requires timed entry reservations during peak season, and visitors report thirty to forty-five minute delays at the park entrance even with reservations. Arriving fifteen minutes before your scheduled entry window helps avoid backup. There are no facilities at Nymph Lake itself, so restrooms and water should be accessed at the Bear Lake trailhead before starting the hike.

Seasonal conditions change the experience dramatically. Summer brings the iconic lily pads, wildflowers, and warm hiking conditions. Fall offers golden aspens and fewer crowds. Winter transforms the lake into a snow-covered field of ice, and the trail becomes a snowshoe or crampon route. Spring means lingering snowpack and slushy conditions well into May. The lake sits within a Leave No Trace area, so visitors should pack out all waste and stay on designated trails to protect the fragile alpine ecosystem surrounding this compact but beautiful mountain lake.

Beautiful lake & a lovely hike to get there from Bear Lake. It does get quite crowded, both at the lake & on the trail there, but still worth it.

Quick and easy hike for all ages. If you are a beginner and looking for something simple but still adventurous this is for you. It’s the first lake in the trail to Emerald Lake. From Nymph lake you can continue to Dream lake and then finally on to Emerald Lake, or simply just travel back to Bear Lake for a lighter day. The trail follows right along the water and you can walk right down to it. We found elk along the way and using the trail to the lake itself.

This was the first stop for us on our way up to Emerald Lake. For those looking for a short hike, this is a relatively short distance from the parking area but it is a good bit of elevation change. The distance is short but it’s all up hill. Being one of the first lakes from the parking area - this area can be pretty busy but it wasn’t a problem to find a spot for a quiet moment to soak it all in. The view is amazing and well worth the trip. If you are not a great hiker - this could be a good first stop before turning around and going back down the hill to see bear lake and its flatter loop trail.

Nymph Lake – A Peaceful Pause Nymph Lake is a small, calm spot along the trail to Dream Lake. Covered in water lilies. It’s a great place to take a breather, snap a few photos, and enjoy the quiet. Not a destination on its own, but a lovely stop on the way up.

This was our second stop after Bear Lake on the way to Emerald Lake. It’s a peaceful little pause before the final trek, with forest fairy vibes and beautiful views. Definitely more crowded since it’s a shorter hike from the parking lot, but still worth a quick stop to soak it all in.
