About Mills Lake

Mills Lake is one of the crown jewels of Rocky Mountain National Park, a pristine alpine lake nestled in Glacier Gorge beneath the towering east face of Longs Peak. Situated in Larimer County near the town of Estes Park, this high-elevation destination draws hikers year-round with its postcard-perfect scenery and accessible trail system. Reviewers consistently rate it among the best lakes in the park, praising the dramatic mountain backdrop that includes Longs Peak at 14,259 feet, Pagoda Mountain, and Chiefs Head Peak. Whether you visit in the lush green of summer or the frozen stillness of winter, Mills Lake delivers views that stay with you long after the hike is over.

The hike to Mills Lake covers roughly five to six miles round trip and is rated as a moderate trail. You can access the route from either the Glacier Gorge trailhead or the Bear Lake trailhead, both of which are served by the park shuttle system. Along the way, hikers pass Alberta Falls and Glacier Falls, two scenic stops that add variety to the trek. The trail surface is well-maintained for most of the route, though it becomes rockier as you approach the lake. Reviewers recommend sturdy hiking shoes with good traction, and during late fall and winter months, micro-spikes, trekking poles, and even snowshoes are strongly encouraged for navigating snow-covered and icy sections of the trail.

Fishing at Mills Lake rewards anglers with rainbow trout in a stunning mountain setting. The lake itself offers flat rocks along its shoreline where visitors can sit, rest, and take photographs of the surrounding peaks. Wildlife sightings are common along the trail, with hikers reporting encounters with elk and chipmunks. The area is notably less crowded than nearby trails such as the Nymph, Dream, and Emerald Lake chain, making it a solid choice for visitors seeking a quieter experience in the park.

Seasonal considerations matter at Mills Lake. May and July receive high marks from reviewers as ideal hiking months, offering comfortable temperatures and manageable trail conditions. Early November brings frozen landscapes and the possibility of walking on the ice-covered lake. Spring and late fall require extra gear preparation due to snow and ice on the trail. Regardless of when you visit, arriving early in the morning between six and seven is strongly recommended by experienced hikers to secure parking and beat the crowds. For those wanting a longer adventure, the trail continues past Mills Lake to Jewel Lake and ultimately to Black Lake, adding mileage and elevation for a full-day outing in one of Colorado's most spectacular alpine gorges.

Super enjoyable hike - decent uphill for a portion but much less populated than other trails we’ve done. Lots of wildlife up close and plenty of space to lounge around the lake. Definitely the favorite lake we saw and we hiked to Nymph, Dream, and Emerald as well. Plus if you go just a bit further along the trail you can visit Jewel Lake - great view of the mountains!!

Absolutelly worth the hike!!! 5 miles out and back of moderate climb. The trail was beautiful all the way. Make sure to stop at alberta falls and Glacier falls along the way.

The trail was a mix of packed snow, loose snow and ice. Spikes recommended but you can get by without them

Easily one of my favorite hikes in the park. Mills lake is stunning. It's also cool to hike it during thawing/melting season because you can hear little particles breaking off and moving down the stream.

Gorgeous - every step of the 6 miles. Meeting an elk on the hike back was quite a surprise.

Good job God. Real nice lake. Keep going and reach Black Lake. Just a heads up, headphones only, your mixtape does not add to the experience for others.

Amazing hike with good fishing opportunities. Rainbow trout were absolutely beautiful. The hike itself was a lot less congested compared to other trails, which is a little surprising because the scenery and accessibility is top-tier.

Challenging but rewarding hike in winter - snowshoes were useful. Saw some people walk out on the lake, so seems like it's completely frozen!
