About Loveland Reservoir

Loveland Reservoir, commonly known as Lake Loveland, is a 135-acre irrigation reservoir located in the heart of Loveland, Colorado. Situated along the Front Range in Larimer County, this urban lake serves double duty as a water storage facility and a popular local fishing spot. The reservoir holds strong populations of walleye and smallmouth bass and receives regular trout stockings from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, making it one of the more productive warm-water and cold-water fisheries in the Loveland area.

Fishing is the primary draw at Loveland Reservoir. Walleye anglers work the lake from boats during low-light hours, while bass fishermen target the rocky shoreline structure. The lake is also a well-known ice fishing destination during winter months, drawing anglers who set up on the ice for walleye, trout, and perch. Public shoreline access is available at North Lake Park along the north shore, along Taft Avenue north of 22nd Street, and along the south shore near the dam. Because private residences line much of the shoreline, boat fishing tends to be the most effective approach for covering water.

The reservoir has one boat ramp, though it is designated for private use. Water levels fluctuate through the season due to irrigation demands, and by late summer the dropping water and short ramp can make launching difficult. Anglers planning to boat should check conditions before heading out, particularly from August onward.

Beyond fishing, the reservoir provides a scenic backdrop for walking and jogging along the paths near North Lake Park. Bird watchers visit the shoreline during migration seasons to spot waterfowl and shorebirds. The lake sits within easy reach of downtown Loveland, making it a convenient spot for a morning cast or an evening walk without a long drive.

A valid Colorado fishing license is required for anyone 16 or older. Check current Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations for species-specific bag limits and size restrictions, especially for walleye, which are managed carefully to maintain the population. Loveland Reservoir delivers solid fishing within city limits for anglers who know where and when to target the bite.
