About Lost Lake

Lost Lake is a tranquil alpine destination tucked into the mountains of Larimer County, Colorado, where anglers, hikers, and nature lovers find a rewarding escape from the front range. Sitting at a peaceful elevation surrounded by recovering forest and panoramic mountain views, this small lake delivers big on solitude and scenery. Whether you are casting a line for rainbow trout or circling the shoreline on foot, Lost Lake offers an unhurried Colorado experience that visitors return to season after season.

Fishing is the headline draw at Lost Lake. Rainbow trout thrive here, and anglers regularly report excellent catches among the lily pads that dot the water's surface. Small lures like Pistol Petes paired with clear-water bobbers produce results, and the lake's compact size means you do not need a boat to reach productive water. The shoreline is accessible enough for families to set up and let kids try their hand at trout fishing without a grueling approach.

The hiking around Lost Lake rewards with wide-open mountain views in every direction. A fire swept through portions of the surrounding forest, removing much of the old-growth canopy, but new growth is pushing through and the landscape is actively regenerating. That open terrain means unobstructed sightlines of the peaks and ridgelines that frame the basin. Bird watchers will appreciate the raptors and songbirds that frequent the recovering habitat, and the relative quiet of the area makes wildlife observation easy.

Seasonal timing matters at Lost Lake. Summer and early fall deliver the best conditions for fishing and hiking, while late spring can bring lingering snowpack on the approach. The lily pads reach full coverage by midsummer, creating a picturesque foreground for the surrounding mountains. There are no developed facilities at the lake, so visitors should pack everything they need, including water, food, and sun protection.

Lost Lake sits within easy reach of other Larimer County high-country destinations, making it a strong addition to a multi-stop day in the mountains. The peaceful atmosphere and reliable trout fishing give it a distinct personality among the many lakes in the region, and the recovering landscape adds a unique dimension that changes with each passing year.

The fishing was fantastic! Cought several very large rainbow trout just past the lily pads on some small pistol Pete's with a clear water bobber. The views were heartbreaking. The trees are all gone, an estimate of 150 years before it will be a thick forest again. No wildlife of any kind with the exception of some birds. Maybe a eagle but not positive.

Great little lake to hike around or take the kids fishing. Only a small section of the lake burned and sprouts of life are showing already.
