About Lake of Glass

Lake of Glass is one of Rocky Mountain National Park's most breathtaking alpine destinations, perched high in Larimer County along the famous Sky Pond trail. With a 4.7-star rating from visitors, this pristine lake lives up to its name with mirror-still waters that reflect the surrounding peaks in stunning clarity. Whether you are an experienced hiker chasing panoramic mountain views or a first-timer looking for one of Colorado's most memorable trails, Lake of Glass rewards every step of the climb.

The hike to Lake of Glass follows the Glacier Gorge Trail, one of the most scenic routes in Rocky Mountain National Park. The trail is beautiful from start to finish, passing waterfalls and subalpine forests before reaching the final scramble up to the lake. That last section involves a rock scramble that requires some hand-over-foot effort, but hikers consistently say the payoff is worth the work. The total round trip is roughly 9 miles with significant elevation gain, so come prepared with proper footwear and layers.

Seasonal conditions play a major role in planning your visit. Early-season hikers in June may encounter deep snowpack on the upper trail, with 3 to 4 feet of snow reported as late as mid-June in some years. Microspikes or traction devices are essential for navigating icy sections, and the scramble to the lake can be particularly slick when frozen. In winter, the lake itself freezes solid and truly looks like glass, but shoe traction is a must if you plan to walk across it. Summer months from July through September offer the most accessible conditions and the best chance at calm, reflective water.

Lake of Glass sits just a quarter mile below Sky Pond, and most hikers continue on to visit both. The panoramic views from Lake of Glass are extraordinary in their own right, with expansive vistas of surrounding peaks and alpine tundra. Many visitors find this spot so striking that it becomes the highlight of the trip, even with Sky Pond waiting ahead. Take time to rest here and absorb the scenery before pushing on.

Because this hike is within Rocky Mountain National Park, a valid park entrance pass or reservation is required during peak season. Start early to secure parking at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead, as lots fill quickly during summer months. There are no facilities at the lake, so carry plenty of water, food, and sun protection. Wind and cold temperatures are common at this elevation even in summer, so pack a windbreaker regardless of the forecast at the trailhead.

I really enjoyed this spot as much as Sky Pond about 1/4 mile ahead. It's panoramic view is extraordinary, the water stunningly clear, and it's expansive presence is humbling. Definitely a place to stop, rest and take it all in before pushing ahead to Sky Pond.

Lake of glass lives up to its name when is frozen. Definitely bring shoe traction if you plan to walk thru it when it's frozen. It is a beautiful place and if you made it here is not very far to sky pond.

This trail will definitely go down as one of my favorites! It was scenic from start to finish. They day I went June 20th was a cool 36 degree start at 6:00am. Reached lake of glass at 9:00. Woul have been much faster but the last mile was 3-4 feet of snow pack. Micro spikes were an awesome invention! I hear that isn't normal this time of year though. The climb up to the lake was almost all ice and very few attempted it which made it nice at the top. Very beautiful but it was super windy and cold. If you want adventure and not a summit I definitely recommend it. Without the snow I would say anyone in decent shape could definitely do it. If it's adverse at all go as far as you dare and I promise you will be satisfied you did!

Was just remembering back to a trip I did here years ago. This place still sticks in my mind as being wonderful. I think the scramble makes the payoff even better because you do have to work a bit to get here. But absolutely worth it. Also like the others, I'm not sure who would rate this as 1 star, absolutely wrong.
