About Lake Estes

Lake Estes is a reservoir in the town of Estes Park in Larimer County, sitting at the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Framed by mountain peaks on all sides, the lake offers one of the most accessible and scenic recreation spots in the Estes Park area. A paved multi-use trail loops around the entire lake, making it popular with walkers, joggers, and cyclists. The trail is handicap accessible and provides constant views of the surrounding peaks, including sightlines to the historic Stanley Hotel from the Cherokee Recreation Area on the east shore.

Fishing is a primary draw at Lake Estes, with anglers reporting consistent catches near the power plant outflow. The lake also supports kayaking and swimming, though the marina operates seasonally and closes during winter months. Boat rentals are available during the operating season. Parking requires a paid permit — $8.25 for a 24-hour online pass at Cherokee Recreation Area — and lots can fill up during peak summer weekends.

Wildlife viewing is exceptional here. Visitors regularly encounter elk herds, mule deer, bald eagles, ducks, and a variety of songbirds along the shoreline trail, often all within a single visit. The elk can be especially active during fall rut season, so keeping a safe distance is important. Dogs must remain on leash.

The Lake Estes Trail doubles as a bike path, and reviewers recommend watching for cyclists if you have small children walking the trail. A small golf course sits adjacent to the lake with views across the water, though it has no driving range. Picnic areas are spaced along the shoreline for family outings. Restrooms are available in the recreation area.

Lake Estes works equally well as a quick stop on the way into Rocky Mountain National Park or as a half-day destination for fishing, paddling, and wildlife watching. Sunsets over the lake draw consistent praise, and the combination of easy access, paved trails, and mountain scenery makes this one of the most visitor-friendly lakes in northern Colorado.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. We accessed the Lake Estes via the Cherokee Recreation Area after we bought an online Parking permit worth $8.25 valid for 24 hours. The place is extremely beautiful. The mountains around the lake - exceptionally beautiful. The only caveat to this place is it’s hard to find the shore access apart from the marina, which was again closed due to seasonal closure. The view of the Stanley hotel from the Cherokee recreation center is exceptional.

One of our all time favorite spots to fish. Keep the lake clean please. We always make sure to clean up after ourselves while also cleaning up trash that was left behind (unfortunately)Keep Colorado beautiful. Respect the park.
