About Donath Lake

Donath Lake is a private lake in Larimer County, Colorado, nestled along a quiet rural road west of Loveland. While public access to the shoreline is restricted, the lake has earned a reputation as one of the most photogenic roadside water features in the area. Visitors and local photographers consistently praise the stunning sunrise and sunset reflections that dance across its calm surface, framed by mature trees and rolling foothills.

The lake sits at the base of the foothills where the plains give way to the mountains, creating a natural amphitheater of scenery. Water lilies bloom across portions of the surface during summer, adding color and texture to an already picturesque setting. The surrounding habitat supports a rich variety of wildlife including foxes, deer, and abundant waterfowl. Birders passing through the area regularly spot herons, ducks, and other species drawn to the lake's sheltered waters and natural vegetation.

Because Donath Lake is privately owned, there are no developed public facilities. No designated parking lots, restrooms, or walking trails exist on the property. A small roadside pull-off allows drivers to pause briefly for photographs, but visitors should be mindful of traffic on the curving road. The lake is best appreciated from the road, where the views across the water toward the foothills and evening sky have stopped more than a few drivers mid-commute.

For photographers, the golden hour light at Donath Lake is the main draw. East-facing sunrise views through the trees and west-facing sunset reflections off the water provide dramatic compositions in nearly any season. Fall brings added dimension with changing foliage, while winter ice creates a different kind of stillness. Spring mornings can produce mist rising off the water surface, a favorite condition among landscape photographers in Larimer County.

While Donath Lake does not offer the recreation options of nearby public reservoirs like Horsetooth or Carter Lake, its quiet beauty and roadside accessibility make it a worthwhile stop for anyone exploring the back roads between Loveland and Estes Park. Respect private property boundaries and enjoy the views from the road.

It's a private lake. However I've taken some of the most phenomenal pictures across. Been known to see a fox running across the road or laying up in a tree watching for its next meal. The waterfowl seem to be abundant. It's always good to catch the reflections of an evening off the water.. and no matter the season it's always easy on the eyes.

I stopped in the middle the road, mid curve (thankfully I was the only one traveling the road this time of day) in awe of this absolutely amazing and gorgeous view of the evening horizon over lake Donath.

Not much for parking, but a nice little pull off along the side of the road. Not much else there that I know of except the beautiful view.
