About Cub Lake

Cub Lake sits in the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park, tucked along the western edge of Moraine Park in Larimer County. If you have been searching for a Colorado hike that mixes easy terrain with genuine wildlife encounters, this is one of the best options on the east side of RMNP. The 2.3-mile trail gains only 540 feet of elevation, yet it delivers views of broad mountain meadows, aspen groves, and a shallow lake blanketed in yellow pond lilies every summer.

The Cub Lake Trail starts at the Cub Lake Trailhead, located 1.3 miles down Fern Lake Road near the west end of Moraine Park. Parking is limited, so arriving early or riding the free Moraine Park Shuttle during summer is a smart move. From the trailhead you cross the Big Thompson River on a sturdy footbridge, then follow a wide, well-graded dirt path through open meadows where elk and mule deer regularly graze at dawn and dusk. Moose sightings are common near the marshy areas closer to the lake, and visitors frequently spot bull moose, cows, and calves wading among the lily pads.

Cub Lake itself is a shallow, marshy body of water rimmed by granite boulders and partially burned forest from the 2012 Fern Lake Fire. The recovering burn zone adds a dramatic backdrop and has opened the canopy, creating prime habitat for woodpeckers, bluebirds, and other cavity-nesting species. Bird watchers will find this stretch especially rewarding. The lily pad coverage peaks in July and August, giving the lake its signature look that draws photographers from across Colorado.

For hikers who want more mileage, the Cub Lake Loop extends the trip to roughly 6.1 miles by connecting with the Pool and Fern Lake trails, creating a moderate loop with about 744 feet of total elevation gain. The loop passes through denser forest and crosses several small streams, making it a solid half-day outing. Fishing is permitted with a valid Colorado fishing license, though Cub Lake is not heavily stocked. Species in RMNP waters include greenback cutthroat trout, brook trout, brown trout, and rainbow trout.

Rocky Mountain National Park charges an entrance fee and requires timed-entry reservations from late May through mid-October. Pets are prohibited on all park trails. The trail is open year-round, though spring and early summer bring muddy sections, and winter visitors should expect packed snow and ice on shaded stretches. Tick activity is notable in the meadow sections from spring through early summer, so long sleeves and insect repellent are recommended.

Empty, but still beautiful. The fire damage along the Fern and Pool trails made for a very quiet hike to Cub Lake. Hopefully, the area will recover with wildlife returning soon. The Cub trail from Cub lake to the parking lot was much more lively, but still no big animals. We completed a moderate hiking loop, ~6 miles. It wasn't terribly difficult to follow, but there are few or no mile markers. It was lightly populated with hikers. Some snow on the trail, in a few concentrated spots.

Great, accessible hike with gorgeous views and good chance to spot wildlife. Cub Lake is not as popular hike as Bear/Nymph/Dream and Emerald Lakes but is a lot more accessible (no snow on the ground nor is it an upward elevation climb) but is pretty straightforward (4.6 mile) out and back gravel hike.

There are far better lakes at RMNP but this one is definitely worth visiting. The trail is fun and relatively easy compared to others. Enjoy!!!

Hiked from Fern Lake TH yesterday to Cub Lake with my wife. It was a good scenic hike. Part of the fun was the anticipation caused by the returning hikers telling us about the moose family waiting for us at the lake. When we arrived there they were amongst the lily pads!!

I hiked Cub Lake recently by starting at its trail head. The steep incline at the end made it really fun to climb, but do not be fooled, it takes a lot of energy and water to get there. The only reason I rated 4 stars was due to the moderately unimpressive view at the end. Overall, great trail for exercise, minor trail for the final view.
