About Camp Lake

Camp Lake, known locally as the Chambers Lake area, is a high-elevation reservoir in Larimer County, Colorado, situated at over 9,000 feet along the Cache la Poudre River corridor roughly 1.5 hours west of Fort Collins. The lake sits within Roosevelt National Forest and provides a genuine backcountry camping and fishing experience with vault toilets, bear boxes, fire pits, and charcoal grills at each of the approximately 51 campsites. The Cameron Peak Fire of 2020 burned hillsides near the campground, but the campground itself survived with many green trees intact, and new growth is already visible across the recovering landscape.

Camping is the primary activity at Chambers Lake. Sites range from RV-friendly spots in the lower loops to tent-only walk-in sites on the hilltop overlooking the water. Reviewers recommend sites numbered 32 and higher in the lower loop for the best lake views and shade, while tent sites 48 through 55 sit on an elevated ridge with panoramic views and a short walk to the water. Site 34 is frequently mentioned as having the best overall view. Bear boxes are provided at every site because black bears are active in the campground, and at least one reviewer encountered a bear at close range at their picnic table. Moose, deer, foxes, and rams have all been spotted in and around camp. The campground costs approximately twenty dollars per night and requires reservations, which sell out quickly, especially to out-of-state visitors.

Fishing draws anglers to Chambers Lake for its trout population. The lake is described as a no-wake body of water, making it ideal for trolling from kayaks and canoes. Fishing from shore is productive in multiple spots, and reviewers note good trout action when conditions are right. However, water quality suffered after the 2020 wildfire, with some visitors reporting murky conditions in the years following the fire. Water levels fluctuate significantly, and the lake has been drained for dam maintenance work, leaving little to no usable water at times. Checking current conditions before hauling gear is strongly recommended.

Kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding are popular when water levels cooperate. The lake is protected from wind in some areas, making it a calm paddling environment for families with children. Wakeless watercraft including pontoon boats are allowed. There are no rental facilities at the lake, and the nearest town for equipment rental is roughly two hours away, so visitors must bring their own gear. A boat ramp provides launch access when water levels are sufficient.

Swimming is discouraged by cold water temperatures at this elevation, though some visitors wade in and describe the water as refreshing. Hiking trails branch out from the campground, though several were closed or obstructed by deadfall following the wildfire. The campground includes a wooden playground for children, picnic tables with wheelchair accessibility, and vault toilets that reviewers describe as generally clean and well-stocked. There is no cell service at Chambers Lake, so downloading offline maps before arrival is essential.

Biting flies and mosquitoes are aggressive, particularly near the water and during low-water seasons. Firewood is available from the camp host at nine dollars per bundle, though fallen wood from fire-damaged trees is plentiful around the campground. Wind can be persistent, especially at exposed hilltop sites. The drive along the Poudre River from Fort Collins is scenic, and State Forest State Park is a short drive from the campground for additional recreation. Stargazing at this elevation and remoteness is exceptional, with reviewers describing it as off the charts.

As others have said, no lake. Next time we're checking Google reviews right before we go to any lake!

Everyone should know there's little to no water at chambers lake. Will not be until 2026. Don't waste your time hauling your paddle boards, canoes, fishing gear, beach towels etc.. feel really sorry for families expecting a mountain beach trip. There isn't any recreational opportunities for swimming or fishing. Shame on them- should be posted on website BEFORE paying for camp site.

Favorite lake to go fishing and troll. No wake lakes for the win. You have to pay $8-10 in cash to park for the day but totally worth it. They do have grills and restrooms. Dispersed camping on the east side of the lake.

Was so excited for our family camping trip to Chambers Lake, and ready to enjoy paddle boarding with the grandkids. Alas, we arrived on Wednesday, July 16th only to find the lake was being drained for work on the dam. Understand that maintenance needs to be done, but to have no notice about the condition of the lake on the campground website is unconscionable. Shame on you, US Forest Service, for not notifying anyone about this, including Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), who had shown up with a boat to do a fish study. We ended up shortening our camping trip from 5 nights to 2.

As of July 13th 2025, our last day camping there, the reservoir was half empty. Just a short line of the lake where you can start your paddle board or kayak. If you have a boat, you might not be able to get it into water. Fishing was still good. Bring extra bug spray, mosquitoes and flies are insane this season because of low water. Was very windy too every day.

A nice winding 1.5 hour drive from Fort Collins along the Poudre River gets you to this campsite. We stayed in spot 20 of 51 available. (Some are tent only) The site was well shaded but I don't know if I'd rent it again due to it's proximity to the main road, and the bathrooms/dumpsters. When the wind was wrong, we knew it. The sites in the 30s had more shade, but a few of them were group sites, so you'd have to pay double to stay there alone. The lake was calm all week, a few late afternoon sprinkles came through, but no heavy rains. We paddleboarded a little, and other's were seen in kayaks. We even saw one guy in a pontoon boat, so I think anything that is "wakeless" is allowed. The biting flies were the worst part. I know staying near water typically means bugs, but they were relentless. No amount of firepit smoke, bug spray, or long sleeves kept them from harassing us any time we were outside our trailer. I'd go back, but I'll explore the state a little more before returning.

What a great campground! Sites are extremely well- maintained, roomy, and offer a feeling of privacy. Restrooms are numerous and clean. Camp hosts were friendly and helpful.

The lake is gorgeous. The restrooms clean, however the tent sites are without any drainage which means if it rains tent sleepers beware. Our tent site turned into a literal lake. A pvc pipe drain would work miracles.

I went camping here with a friend's family and the experience was great. The nearby trails were fun to walk along and were great for any skill level. There was plenty of firewood around and they had fire pits and a grill. Unfortunately it rained starting at 7 PM when we visited but overall I had a great time. I would definitely go again.
