About Pastorius Reservoir

Pastorius Reservoir is a small, peaceful lake located just outside Durango in La Plata County, surrounded by flat farmland with wide-open views of the surrounding landscape. It serves as a go-to local spot for fishing, paddling, and unwinding close to town without the hassle of a long drive into the backcountry. The reservoir draws a loyal following of Durango-area residents who visit regularly, some daily during their lunch breaks, making it a true neighborhood gem in the Four Corners region.

Fishing is the primary draw at Pastorius Reservoir, though results are inconsistent. The reservoir holds small trout, and anglers report mixed success depending on the day and season. The water is relatively shallow, averaging around two feet in parts, which limits fish survival past the first year. Catch-and-release practices are encouraged by regulars to help maintain the fishery. When the bite is on, it can be a productive outing, but visitors should set expectations accordingly and enjoy the scenery regardless.

Paddling is gaining popularity at Pastorius, with kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders praising the calm, flat water as ideal for beginners. The reservoir's small footprint means you can explore the entire shoreline in a relaxed session. Swimming is also common here, making it a versatile spot for families looking to cool off on warm summer days. The area around the reservoir is rich with wild sage, including five different species such as white sage and big blue sage, which attracts foragers and photographers alike.

The reservoir is free to access, with no entry fee reported by most visitors, though some mention occasional fees. There are no picnic tables or developed facilities on-site, so bringing your own seating and supplies is recommended. Parking is available near the water. The reservoir has become noticeably busier in recent seasons, particularly on summer weekends, so visiting on weekdays or during early morning and evening hours offers a more tranquil experience. Sunset sessions are a particular highlight, with the open landscape providing unobstructed views as the light fades over the farmland. Dogs are welcome at the reservoir. Water levels can fluctuate, and the reservoir has been reported as nearly dried up during drought conditions, so checking current levels before a visit is advisable.

Came here because Lake nighthawk closed at 7:00 and I was trying to make the sunset. Absolutely worth the trip! It was free and not crowded.

One of the most beautiful places to pick wild sage, five species grow here including white and big blue. Great fishing and amazing for photography! I simply love it when I’m here ❤️
