About Lake Eileen

Lake Eileen is a small high-alpine pond nestled in the San Juan Mountains of La Plata County, Colorado. Reached by a moderately steep but rewarding hike of about 2 to 2.5 miles one way, this quiet mountain lake rewards hikers with sweeping valley views, snow-capped peaks, and the kind of solitude that keeps people coming back to the southwestern Colorado backcountry. If you are looking for a half-day hiking destination near Durango with genuine alpine scenery, Lake Eileen delivers.

The trail to Lake Eileen starts on the north side of the main road, marked with visible signage. Parking is directly across the street on the south side and fits roughly five vehicles, so arriving early on summer weekends is a smart move. The route gains elevation steadily through forested terrain, crossing a small stream along the way. Sections of previously burned forest are regenerating with lush plant growth, and the trail stays mostly shaded under tree cover. Hikers report the round trip at around 3.8 miles with a moderate grade, making it accessible for fit beginners and enjoyable for experienced hikers looking for a shorter outing.

The views along the trail are a highlight in their own right. On clear days you can see across the valley to distant waterfalls, snow-covered summits, and miles of undeveloped mountain terrain. Cell service, including 5G, has been reported along the route, which is unusual for a backcountry hike and useful for safety.

Lake Eileen itself is compact and more pond-like than lake-like, with a mix of marshland and lily pads around its edges. It is not a swimming or boating destination. Instead, the appeal is the peaceful alpine setting, wildflower-lined shores, and the satisfaction of reaching a beautiful high-country spot under your own power. The marshy shoreline means dogs may have difficulty finding open water to drink, so pack extra water for four-legged hiking partners. The trail is dog-friendly and lightly trafficked.

The best time to visit is mid-June through September, after snowmelt opens the trail and before early fall storms move in. Plan on two to five hours for the round trip, depending on how long you linger at the lake. Bring layers, as temperatures at altitude can shift quickly even in summer.

The trailhead starts on the north side of the main road. There is signage for the trail visible from the road. It's just before the road wraps around the end of the lake. If you drive over any bridges, then you went to far. Parking is on the south side of the road directly across the street from the trail and holds about 5 cars. The hike is mostly in the trees and you cross 1 small stream. No large medows, but plenty of plant life on the trail. The burned areas are growing back nicely and not distracting at all. You'll have beautiful views of the valley below, snow capped mountains, and if you look closely you can see waterfalls on the opposite side of the valley and a cell tower. We had 5g service during the entire hike. The hike is about 2 miles and dog friendly. Plan on 2 to 5 hours out of your day, depending on how much time you spend at the lake.

We liked this little trail to Lake Eileen. It's lightly trafficked and you get some great views on the way up. We made a quick video of the hike if you're interested in a preview. Check it out on our youtube channel Explore Some More.

Beautiful hike. Lake is a mix of marshland and liliponds so bring some extra water for your dog as it's hard for them to get a drink.

Beautiful high alpine pond. The hike is steep but less than 2.5 miles up. Well worth the hike.
