About Electra Lake

Electra Lake sits in a stunning mountain basin in La Plata County, just north of Durango along the Animas Valley. This privately owned reservoir is surrounded by dense aspen groves and towering peaks, drawing visitors who want a quieter alternative to the busier lakes of the San Juan Mountains. While public access is limited and managed through a gate fee, the payoff is crystal-clear water and scenery that visitors consistently describe as among the most beautiful in Colorado.

Fishing at Electra Lake operates under specific rules that set it apart from most Colorado waters. Because the lake is privately managed, you do not need a Colorado state fishing license. Instead, anglers pay a fee at the gate for access. Artificial lures only are permitted, and no live bait of any kind is allowed. Visitors report that fishing can be challenging here, with limited catch success despite the clean, clear water. The shoreline is largely bordered by private homes, which restricts bank fishing to certain areas. If you plan to fish, bring a small watercraft or be prepared to walk the accessible stretches of shore.

Hiking around Electra Lake is a highlight in its own right. The north end of the lake offers a pleasant trail that winds through wildflower meadows and aspen forest, making it especially rewarding during late summer and early fall when the aspens turn gold. The surrounding terrain is relatively gentle compared to the high alpine trails nearby, so it suits families and casual hikers looking for a scenic walk without extreme elevation gain.

Water levels at Electra Lake fluctuate significantly depending on the season and year. Visitors have noted levels dropping several feet by late fall, which can expose the lakebed and change the shoreline dramatically. Before planning a trip, check current conditions, especially if you intend to launch a kayak or canoe. The lake has periodically been closed to the public for maintenance or operational reasons, so verifying access ahead of your visit is essential.

Electra Lake is best experienced as a scenic getaway rather than a full-day recreation destination. The views alone justify the drive, and the quiet atmosphere makes it ideal for photography, picnicking, and short hikes. Visitors looking for a peaceful spot within easy reach of Durango will find Electra Lake worth the detour.

It's basically a private lake with no access. The water level is down something like 6 feet, as of late Oct 2023. Still, it's a pretty place.

Great place for great views! Wasn't very fishing friendly due to so many privately-owned houses all along the Lake. There are a lot of signs along the roads that read say stay away due to private property. We where there for several hours did not catch anything or see no signs of any fish. Lake is very clean crystal clear water. It is a privately owned Lake so you do not need a state license if you do want to fish just pay the fee at the gate. Just a reminder this is an artificial lure only so no bait what's so ever is allowed. All in all great place for views but not so much for fishing.

Right now the lake is so low you can walk on it. Hiking around the north end is always a pleasant time past wildflowers and through an aspen forest.
