About West Lake

West Lake is a neighborhood gem tucked inside the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt in Jefferson County, just minutes from downtown Denver along the I-70 corridor. This urban lake offers surprisingly good fishing, a well-maintained trail network, and a peaceful escape from the surrounding metro area. Locals know it as a reliable spot for a quick morning run, an after-work dog walk, or an afternoon casting session without the drive to the mountains.

Fishing is the main draw at West Lake. The lake holds panfish, bass, and crawfish, and anglers consistently report success with crankbaits and live worms. A local regulation requires flies and lures only, and bass under 15 inches must be released. Longtime visitors encourage strict catch-and-release to protect the fishery, which has faced pressure from anglers keeping too many fish. If you respect the rules, West Lake rewards you with a solid front-range fishing experience just off Youngfield Street.

Beyond fishing, the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt trail system connects West Lake to the surrounding park network, making it a popular route for runners, walkers, and cyclists. The paved trail loops around the lake and extends along Clear Creek, giving you options for both quick loops and longer out-and-back runs. The park is well-maintained, with plenty of shade trees along the trail — a welcome feature during Colorado's hot summer afternoons.

Bird watchers will find West Lake worth a stop, especially during spring and fall migration. The lake and its surrounding wetland habitat attract herons, ducks, geese, and a rotating cast of songbirds. Sunsets over the lake are a local favorite, with the water reflecting warm colors against the foothills to the west.

West Lake is dog-friendly, and you will regularly see owners walking their dogs along the greenbelt paths. Access the lake through the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt Youngfield entrance for the easiest parking and trailhead access. The lake sits at a lower elevation, making it accessible year-round, though fishing is best from spring through fall.

For anyone living along the front range who wants a nature break without a mountain commute, West Lake delivers a surprisingly rich outdoor experience right in the Denver metro area.

For all you out of state people or anyone for that matter who don't read rules. West Lake is flies and lures only. Just like the big lake west of it. It used to be good, but many people are keeping everything. Practice catch and release and quit using bait!!

Pretty lake, it is kind of hard to see and get to as there was a lot of construction going on by the pedestrian cross walks but for the most part and all the lake I could see it was quite beautiful and relaxing. The park over there is always kept so clean and neat. The animals there are always respected, great bike trail or walking/running trail.
