About Tabor Lake

Tabor Lake is a hidden gem tucked into the suburbs of Wheat Ridge in Jefferson County, Colorado, offering a surprisingly peaceful retreat just minutes from downtown Denver. If you are looking for a place to unwind, cast a line, or stretch your legs on a scenic loop trail, Tabor Lake delivers that rare combination of urban convenience and genuine natural beauty.

Anglers flock to Tabor Lake year-round for its reliable smallmouth bass and saugeye fishing. The water runs remarkably clear, giving sight-fishing enthusiasts an edge during calm mornings. Rattletraps and minnows are the go-to presentations here, with fall and spring offering the best bite windows. Expect moss buildup during warmer months, so plan your tackle accordingly. The lake also holds populations of largemouth bass, making it a solid multi-species destination for Front Range bass anglers.

Beyond fishing, Tabor Lake sits within a network of interconnected lakes and paved paths that make it a favorite for runners, walkers, and casual strollers. The trail system loops around the water and connects to neighboring lakes, providing enough distance for a proper workout or a leisurely afternoon outing. Wildlife sightings are common along the shoreline, including snapping turtles and northern water snakes, adding a touch of wildness to the suburban setting.

The lake sees steady year-round use thanks to its low elevation and accessibility. Summer mornings and late afternoons draw the largest crowds, while weekday visits reward you with near-solitude. There is no boat ramp or formal dock, so this is a shore-fishing and walk-in destination. Parking is available nearby, and the paved trail network makes the area wheelchair-friendly for most sections.

For Jefferson County residents and Denver metro visitors searching for a quick nature escape, Tabor Lake checks every box. Whether you are training for a 5K on the lakeside paths, teaching a kid to fish, or simply sitting on the bank watching the water, this urban oasis consistently earns its reputation as one of Wheat Ridge's most loved outdoor spaces.

Bass, saugeye, snapping turtle, and some kind of big snake (poisonous water moccasin?--northern water snake?) seen here. Sorry didn't get a picture of the snake but it was about 3ft and swam with its head way above water like an S
