About East Reservoir

East Reservoir is a compact 14-acre body of water at the intersection of Kipling Parkway and West Florida Avenue in Lakewood, Jefferson County. Originally built to irrigate nearby farmland, this reservoir now serves as a neighborhood recreation spot where locals walk, fish, and watch waterfowl without leaving the suburbs. If you want a low-key Colorado lake experience close to Denver, East Reservoir is one of those hidden-in-plain-sight gems that most people drive past without realizing what it offers.

A paved and natural-surface trail loops around the entire reservoir, giving walkers and joggers a quick circuit with open water views the whole way. The loop is relatively short — under a mile — making it a popular spot for daily dog walks and lunchtime strolls. The terrain is flat and accessible, with no significant elevation change. On any given afternoon you will see a mix of dog walkers, joggers, anglers casting from the bank, and birders scanning the water for ducks and herons. The setting is suburban, with residential neighborhoods visible across the parkway, but the open water and the mountain views to the west give it a surprisingly pleasant atmosphere.

Fishing is a primary draw at East Reservoir. The water holds rainbow trout, largemouth bass, and grass carp. The reservoir is stocked periodically, and the dam area on the south end tends to produce the most consistent catches. Standard Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations apply, and a valid fishing license is required. The relatively small size of the reservoir means bank fishing covers the water effectively — no boat is needed, and watercraft are not permitted.

Bird watching is rewarding here despite the urban setting. The open water attracts mallards, Canada geese, American coots, and the occasional great blue heron. During migration seasons in spring and fall, the reservoir can host a wider variety of waterfowl. Drone photography enthusiasts have also discovered the spot for aerial shots of the reservoir with the mountain backdrop, though local drone regulations should be checked with the City of Lakewood before flying.

The park has minimal developed amenities. Access is from Arkansas Street off Kipling Parkway, where a small parking area serves as the main entry point. There are no restrooms, no picnic shelters, and no playgrounds. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on leash, especially near the fishing areas. The reservoir is managed by the City of Lakewood as part of its parks and open space system. It is free to visit with no entrance fee, making it an easy add to a daily routine for residents of the surrounding Lakewood and Littleton neighborhoods.

Nice open space for a walk. Not sure if there are paths: nothing visible after the foot of snow.
