About Blunn Reservoir

Blunn Reservoir is a small, managed fishing lake tucked into the foothills of Jefferson County, just west of the Denver metro area near the town of Arvada. For Front Range residents looking for a quick outdoor escape without a long mountain drive, Blunn offers a scenic reservoir experience with stocked trout and a peaceful atmosphere that visitors return to year after year.

Fishing is the primary activity at Blunn Reservoir, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocks it periodically with rainbow trout. The stocking schedule typically runs from spring through early fall, so timing a visit around a recent stock gives anglers the best odds. Reviews suggest that fishing success can vary significantly; some visitors report solid catches while others struggle to get a bite even shortly after stocking. Bringing a variety of bait options and adjusting your approach throughout the day helps. The reservoir also sees requests from regulars for additional species beyond rainbow trout and more frequent stocking.

The reservoir features dock access for fishing, though visitors note that more docks would improve the experience during busy periods. Shore fishing is available around portions of the lake, giving families and casual anglers room to set up. The compact size means you can walk the accessible areas quickly, making it a manageable outing for families with young children or anyone looking for a short visit rather than an all-day commitment.

Rangers at Blunn Reservoir earn consistent praise for being friendly, helpful, and welcoming to first-time visitors. That personal touch makes a difference, especially for families introducing kids to fishing or newcomers unfamiliar with Colorado fishing regulations. The park setting is well maintained, and the surrounding landscape provides attractive views of the foothills.

Blunn Reservoir operates on set hours, so checking the current schedule before arriving is important. Summer hours provide the longest window, though some visitors wish access extended later into the evening. A valid Colorado fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older, and standard state bag and possession limits apply.

The reservoir sits at a moderate elevation in the Front Range foothills, making it accessible year-round by road, though winter fishing opportunities depend on conditions and seasonal closures. Spring and early summer offer the best combination of comfortable weather and freshly stocked trout. The proximity to Arvada and the greater Denver metro makes Blunn Reservoir a convenient weeknight or weekend fishing spot that requires minimal planning.

Blunn Reservoir is best suited for casual anglers, families wanting a low-key outdoor afternoon, and Denver-area residents seeking nearby fishing without mountain traffic.

They need more docks and they need to stock it more with other speices besides rainbow trout and more feeder fish too plus they could stay open longer like till 10pm in the summer

Although we didn't catch one this time, what a beautiful sight! The rangers were absolutely fun and so welcoming. Our first time there was a blast and can't wait to come back! So peaceful! Thank you!

Went fishing and caught nothing even though it was stalked 9/15/23. Not even 1 bite. Used worms, power bait, salmon eggs. It's beautiful but not for fishing.
