About Meridian Lake

Meridian Lake sits tucked into the mountains just minutes from downtown Crested Butte, making it one of the most accessible alpine lakes in Gunnison County. Also known as Long Lake for its narrow, stretched-out shape, this hidden gem rewards visitors with emerald-green water, wildflower-lined shores, and sweeping views of Mt. Crested Butte from the trailhead. The short but steep hike to reach the lake keeps crowds manageable, and once you arrive, the scene feels a world away from the bustle of town.

The trail to Meridian Lake covers roughly 2 to 2.6 miles round trip with about 400 feet of elevation gain, starting near the Meridian Lake residential area at approximately 9,400 feet and climbing to the lake at roughly 9,645 feet. The path is steep in places but short enough for families, older hikers, and young children to manage at a steady pace. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the trail is accessible year-round, though snow typically covers the route from December through May.

Swimming is one of the top draws at Meridian Lake during summer months. The water warms up more than the higher-elevation glacier lakes in the area, and visitors describe it as clean and emerald-colored. Paddleboarding has become increasingly popular here, with the long, calm surface providing an ideal setting for a leisurely paddle. Picnicking along the shoreline is another favorite activity, though flat spots near the water fill up quickly on busy weekends.

Anglers should note that Meridian Lake is not a primary fishing destination, but the peaceful setting and proximity to Crested Butte make it a worthwhile stop for anyone exploring the area. Hammocking, birdwatching, and simply soaking in the mountain scenery round out the experience.

Parking at the trailhead is limited to roughly 5 to 10 vehicles, and there are no restrooms at the trailhead or lakeside. No entrance fee is required. Visitors should be aware that private property borders portions of the lake, so stay on marked trails and respect all posted signage. One quirk worth noting: leeches have been spotted in the shallows, so check yourself after wading or swimming. Despite this, Meridian Lake remains one of the best quick escapes near Crested Butte for a summer swim, a sunset paddle, or a family-friendly hike with a big payoff.

Absolutely beautiful trail with lots of variety… there’s a little creek, lots of wildflowers, mountain views, and the lake. It’s a very short but very steep hike up. Parking was somewhat limited but I was able to snag a spot.

Steep walk, but worth the effort. Long lake up the mountain.

the signage now refers to this as Long Lake, which is aptly named. perfect for paddle boarding, i imagine. steep climb up, but only 0.3 mi, so short. steep access into the water. our dog enjoyed dipping her toes in. although, i am 99% sure i had a leech on my foot after wading in the water, so just check yourself if you do swim!

Nice hidden lake. A pretty steep but short climb to arrive. Not very many flat areas to hang out near the lake and most spots are already taken. The dog enjoyed it and there is no leash law which is awesome for voice command good dogs. I liked it but nothing fabulous.

Great family hike! 70 year old granddad, 65 and 58 year old grandmothers, young couple and two grandchildren. The one year old was backpacked in. A steady uphill climb opens up to a beautiful pristine mountain lake. Plenty of access for swimming, paddle boarding and picnicking. Walk back to the trailhead is mostly downhill and easy.

Hung out for a lazy hammock afternoon. Easy to get to from the trail. Trail is nice for a small walk as well.

Amazing swimming hole, free of boats, when I was there at least, with clean, emerald water. Little hike up a hill to get to this serene spot. And the water is much warmer than the glacier lakes higher up.
