About Beaver Lake

Beaver Lake is a small, scenic mountain lake in Gunnison County, Colorado, tucked along the Silver Jack Reservoir and Owl Creek Pass road in the Uncompahgre National Forest. With clear water, a compact USFS campground right on the shoreline, and views that visitors describe as postcard-worthy around every turn, Beaver Lake is the kind of place that rewards campers and paddlers who venture off the beaten path in western Colorado.

Camping is the primary draw here. The USFS campground offers roughly 15 sites with direct views of the lake and easy water access. This is a no-frills setup — vault toilets are available but there are no hookups, no showers, and no developed facilities beyond the basics. What you trade in amenities you gain in atmosphere. Sunsets over the lake are described as breathtaking, and the campground is small enough to feel private without being isolated. Families with young children report the area as welcoming and manageable.

Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular on the calm, clear water. The lake is small enough that you can paddle the full perimeter in a relaxed session, making it a great choice for beginners or anyone who just wants a peaceful morning on the water. Swimming is also possible during the warmer months, though mountain lake temperatures keep it refreshing. Fishing is available but described as decent rather than exceptional — this is a place to enjoy a line in the water alongside other activities rather than a dedicated angling destination.

Hiking opportunities extend in every direction from the campground. The surrounding Uncompahgre National Forest offers trails through alpine meadows and forested ridges, and reviewers highlight the ability to explore extensively without needing to drive to separate trailheads. The Owl Creek Pass road itself is a scenic drive worth the trip.

Two things to prepare for: mosquitoes and wildlife. Multiple visitors report aggressive mosquito activity, especially after rain, so bring plenty of bug spray and consider a head net during peak summer months. Bear sightings have been reported in the area, so proper food storage is essential. Open-range cattle also roam through the campground, which adds local character but means watching your step around camp. The best time to visit is July through September, with Labor Day weekend marking the tail end of the comfortable camping season.

Pretty cool campground! Previews of both sides of the ridge. Fishing is decent, but not super crazy. Great hiking and camping very close to this lake. Endless directions you can hike and explore without having to drive anywhere.

Absolutely beautiful little lake pretty private. Did see a bear so definitely be careful of food and vault toilets weren't too bad. Sunset is breathe taking.

Typical small USFS campground, no facilities or hookups, only pit toilets. Fishing nearby, but it had been raining heavily before we visited, so it was very muddy and the mosquitoes were intent on eating us alive. This is on the Silver Jack reservoir and Owl Creek Pass USFS road, so the area is quite scenic.

Over all an excellent experience. There's plenty of camping sites and lakes to visit. Our little ones fell in love with the natural beauty.

We camped for one night at Beaver Lake. This is a small camp ground with about 15 lots. The campground is right next to Beaver Lake with open views of the water. There were also cows that roamed free in the area which was a surprise, just watch out for their large poops that can surprise you when walking around. A great spot for a few night of camping.

Beautiful small lake with a very nice campground. We spent the day here over labor day. We swam and paddle boarded in the lake here. It's a beautiful spot.
