About Lake Irwin

Lake Irwin is a high-alpine gem in Gunnison County, Colorado, nestled in the mountains near Crested Butte. Rated 4.8 stars across dozens of reviews, this lake earns its reputation as one of the most scenic water destinations in the state. A picturesque dirt road winds up to the lake through wildflower-covered meadows, and the surrounding peaks still carry snow well into summer. The crystal-clear water, mountain backdrop, and peaceful atmosphere make Lake Irwin a favorite for families, anglers, and paddlers looking for a genuine Colorado alpine lake experience.

Fishing is a top draw at Lake Irwin, with rainbow trout averaging eight to twelve inches regularly caught from shore and dock. Multiple reviewers describe the trout fishing as reliable and family-friendly, making it a solid choice for introducing kids to angling in a beautiful setting. The water clarity is exceptional, with paddleboarders reporting they can see fish swimming below them. A dock provides a convenient spot for fishing, relaxing, and launching into the water.

Paddleboarding and kayaking are the primary on-water activities at Lake Irwin. Motorized watercraft are not allowed, which preserves the quiet, serene character that reviewers repeatedly praise. Canoeing is also popular, and visitors recommend bringing or renting a paddleboard to experience the lake from the water. Swimming happens at the lake, including a cliff-jumping spot along the shoreline trail where adventurous visitors leap into the cold alpine water. The water temperature stays brisk even in summer, so be prepared for a shock.

A trail loops around the lake, offering an accessible hike with waterfall views along the route. The nearby Scarp Ridge trail, accessed from a trailhead near the lodge above the lake, provides a more challenging hiking option with expansive mountain panoramas. The area is also popular for snowshoeing and winter hiking, with visitors describing snow-covered winter visits as magical, with sunlight sparkling on fresh powder. Wildflower season along the drive up to the lake is a highlight that multiple reviewers call out.

Camping is available at campgrounds near the lake with mountain range views, though reviewers note there is no potable water at the campsite. The area sits at significant elevation, and visitors coming from lower altitudes should plan for altitude sickness by hydrating and ascending gradually. The lake can get crowded during peak summer weekends, so arriving early secures a better parking spot and a quieter experience. Off-season visits deliver solitude and a completely different but equally rewarding atmosphere. Dogs are welcome and enjoy splashing in the shallows. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended for the approach road, though standard vehicles can make it in dry conditions.

Beautiful place to get married (and altitude sickness). The lake is so shiny and clear it almost makes you forget that you feel like you want to vomit because you ascended way too quickly and didn’t take the electrolyte drink packets you were advised to consume.

We went paddle boarding here. The water was so clear you could see the fish. The scenery was amazing. You can hike around the lake as well. Get there early for a spot!

Beautiful Alpine lake with a scenic drive leading up to it. We drove our 4x4 all the way to the lake early morning and enjoyed the serene surroundings.

I used to live in Mt. Crested Butte (Crusty Butt) and frequently rode my motorcycle and snowmobile out here! So beautiful!!

This is my new favorite walk about place. Discovered it last year and explored the area further this year. A lot of trout and a good number of fishermen trying their hand at catching them. The drive is a very picturesque one and a lot to hike around and see.

There’s something for everyone here: camping, hiking, fishing, water play, and motorized watercraft aren’t allowed to spoil the serenity. Loved it

This was an amazing place. Definitely didn’t expect it to be as nice as it was. Lots of people at the lake/shore but if you do the trail around the lake it wasn’t crowded at all. We had fun fishing catching some rainbow trout and lots of people were out kayaking and swimming. There is a beautiful waterfall along the trail, and a cool rock/cliff jumping area where you can jump into the water (if you’re willing to brave the cold).
