About Clear Lake

Clear Lake in Gunnison County is a pristine alpine fishing hole nestled in the Uncompahgre National Forest near Silver Jack Reservoir. Reached by a short hike through aspen groves and wildflower meadows, this quiet mountain lake rewards visitors with mirror-still water reflecting the surrounding peaks and a sense of solitude that is increasingly hard to find in Colorado. If you are looking for an easy backcountry experience with real fishing opportunities, Clear Lake deserves a spot on your list.

The trail to Clear Lake begins near Rowdy Lake, about one mile along a rough four-wheel-drive road from the Silver Jack area. If your vehicle lacks high clearance, park at a wide spot along the road and walk the remaining distance to the trailhead. From Rowdy Lake, the trail covers roughly one mile of gentle terrain through stands of quaking aspen and open meadows thick with grass and wildflowers during summer. The path is easy to follow and suitable for families with children, though mosquitoes become aggressive once the sun starts dropping, so bring insect repellent.

Fishing at Clear Lake produces cutthroat trout, and nearby Rowdy Lake offers similar opportunities. Anglers report the best action near the inlet, particularly with fly fishing gear. The lake can be hit or miss depending on the season and stocking schedule, but patient anglers willing to work the shoreline often find success. The area around Silver Jack Reservoir provides additional fishing options when Clear Lake runs slow. A valid Colorado fishing license is required.

The landscape surrounding Clear Lake holds cultural significance as well. Remnants of historic Ute wikiup shelters can be found near the lake, evidence of the indigenous people who hunted and camped in these mountains for centuries. Please observe these archaeological sites from a distance and leave them undisturbed.

Clear Lake sits in a remote area where weather changes quickly. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during July and August, and wildfire smoke can reduce visibility during late summer, as experienced during the heavy smoke events of recent fire seasons. The rough access road limits vehicle types, but that same difficulty keeps the crowds manageable. Cell service is unreliable throughout the Silver Jack corridor, so plan accordingly and let someone know your itinerary before heading out.

The road requires 4WD and clearance in one spot, but can park before there and hike to the trailhead. Very beautiful area. The second lake is the better one, but both are beautiful.

It's a great place to escape into nature. Be respectful of the rules and be very aware of wildlife.

One of my favorite places to go to unwind, tucked on the far side of the lake you can almost nap in the grass and watch your bobber do its thing. Mosquitoes are thick as soon as the sun starts going down so bring bug spray !

Wind, rain, sun, 🌨 snow, and the fishing 🎣 was ok. Silver Jack was full but it was muddy. Couldn't fish because of it. Need to wait a couple weeks or so to do any good fishing!

Rough road to the trail head but there area wide spots to park and walk the remainder. Area is super pretty except for the smoke from wildfires. Very heavy smoke and haze in August 2021. It's less than a mile stroll to Clear Lake where there were signs of fish but none caught. Caught a cut throat near the inlet at Rowdy Lake. Very family friendly spot for even the littlest angler. If you are in the area, it's worth a stop.
