About Yamcolo Reservoir

Yamcolo Reservoir sits tucked away in a remote pocket of Garfield County, Colorado, where paved roads give way to gravel and then dirt before revealing one of the state's quieter alpine escapes. Perched at high elevation near the Flat Tops Wilderness, this small reservoir rewards visitors willing to make the drive with stunning mountain scenery, uncrowded shorelines, and a genuine sense of solitude that larger Front Range lakes simply cannot match.

Fishing is the main draw at Yamcolo Reservoir, and anglers who make the trek consistently report productive outings in peaceful conditions. The reservoir supports populations of brook trout and rainbow trout, and the lack of crowds means you can usually pick your spot along the shoreline or launch a small boat without competing for space. Fly fishing from the bank or from a canoe is a popular approach, especially during summer mornings and early fall evenings when insect hatches bring fish to the surface.

Paddlers will find Yamcolo Reservoir well suited for canoeing and kayaking. The reservoir is compact enough to explore in an afternoon, and its sheltered location keeps wind manageable on most days. There is no marina or motorized boat traffic to contend with, so the water stays calm and quiet, a real advantage for anyone seeking a reflective paddle through high-country scenery.

Hiking opportunities surround the reservoir. A trail circles the shoreline, and nearby access points lead into the Flat Tops Wilderness for longer backcountry routes. Wildlife sightings are common, making this a worthwhile stop for bird watching and nature photography. The area around the reservoir also offers dispersed camping for those who want to extend their visit into an overnight adventure.

Seasonal timing matters at Yamcolo Reservoir. The access road can be rough and may require good ground clearance, though four-wheel drive is not strictly necessary. Summer and early fall deliver the best conditions, with the transition between seasons painting the surrounding aspen groves in vivid gold and orange. Temperatures run cool even in midsummer, so layers are a smart addition to any packing list. Facilities are minimal, so visitors should plan to bring their own water and supplies and pack out all trash.

Beautiful lake to fish and walk around, so much natural beauty in the state but this is worth your time if in the area.

A paved road, to a gravel road, to a dirt road, to some of the most beautiful scenery in all of Colorado. Yes it’s a bit off the beaten track, yes you need good ground clearance on your car, but you really don’t need four-wheel-drive. This place at the turn of the seasons, like right now, is flat out amazing.
