About Stillwater Reservoir

Stillwater Reservoir is a high-country gem in Garfield County, tucked beneath the Flat Tops Wilderness on the western slope of Colorado. Reached via a scenic drive west from Yampa on County Road 7, the reservoir sits at around 10,000 feet in elevation where subalpine meadows meet dense spruce-fir forests. The road turns to well-maintained dirt before you arrive, but any vehicle with decent clearance can make the trip without trouble.

Trout fishing at Stillwater Reservoir draws anglers looking for productive water away from the I-70 corridor crowds. The reservoir holds rainbow trout, brook trout, and cutthroat trout, with the best action typically coming in the mornings and evenings during summer months. Shore fishing is accessible along several points, and small boats, kayaks, and float tubes open up the deeper sections near the inlet and dam. Fly fishing with dry flies during evening hatches can be exceptional in July and August. A Colorado fishing license is required, and the reservoir follows standard state regulations.

Hiking trails fan out from the Stillwater area into the Flat Tops Wilderness, one of Colorado's largest and most underrated wilderness areas. The terrain features high plateaus, alpine lakes, and volcanic mesa formations unlike anything else in the state. Trail conditions range from easy lakeside walks to multi-day backcountry routes that connect to the Chinese Wall and Devils Causeway. Wildflowers carpet the meadows from late June through mid-August.

Camping options include developed Forest Service campgrounds near the reservoir with vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. Dispersed camping is available along the approach road for those who want a more remote setup. The campgrounds fill up on summer weekends, so arriving by Thursday or early Friday is worth planning for.

Wildlife in the area includes mule deer, elk, black bears, and a healthy population of Canada geese that frequent the reservoir shoreline. Birdwatching is rewarding throughout the summer season. The surrounding meadows support wildflower displays that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

The nearest town for supplies is Yampa, about 20 miles east on the paved highway. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent at the reservoir, so download maps and plan ahead. Stillwater Reservoir delivers the kind of high-altitude solitude and scenery that makes the dirt-road drive feel like part of the reward.

The geese were entertaining, fishing was poor, scenery was pretty good but brown.

Simply incredible. A nice (scenic) drive West from Yampa on Col Rt 7, a road that becomes dirt/gravel but is well maintained. Scenery, isolation, wildlife, lots of everything. Impressive views of the Flat-top peaks. You will NOT need 4WD, but don't drive a low ground clearance sports car there! I had a Subaru rental, no problems.
