About Sweitzer Lake

Sweitzer Lake State Park sits just minutes from downtown Delta in western Colorado, offering a 137-acre warm-water reservoir ringed by a 1.5-mile loop trail. The park draws visitors year-round for water skiing, swimming at the designated beach, and fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and carp. Anglers should note that all bass fishing is catch-and-release only, part of an ongoing effort to maintain the lake's trophy largemouth bass fishery.

The reservoir permits motorized boating, jet skiing, sailing, and canoeing, with a paved boat ramp on the west shore near the park office. A sandy swim beach provides a welcome cooldown during hot western-slope summers, and picnic areas with grills line the shoreline. Families bring paddleboards and spend afternoons floating on water that stays warmer than most Colorado lakes thanks to the lower 5,100-foot elevation.

Bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts appreciate the reservoir's role as a stopover for migratory waterfowl. Shotgun hunting is allowed within park boundaries, and waterfowl hunting is permitted on weekends, Wednesdays, and legal holidays during the season. Horseback riding is welcome on trails outside the picnic areas and swim beach.

Sweitzer Lake is a day-use park only with no overnight camping, so plan your visit between sunrise and sunset. The park charges a daily vehicle pass fee. Restrooms and shower facilities are located near the boat ramp and park office. For those exploring the North Fork Valley, the park provides an easy half-day outing before continuing to nearby orchards, wineries, and the town of Paonia.

Visitors consistently praise the lake for its relaxed pace and uncrowded conditions, especially in late fall. Whether you are casting for trophy bass from the bank, paddleboarding with your kids, or enjoying a streamside picnic, Sweitzer Lake rewards those willing to venture off the beaten path in Delta County.

Not much fish in the water

Super fun place to cool off. Paddle board and play with the kids.

First time waterfowl hunting here. The blind reservation system is pretty well pointless. Reserve a zone and have folks hunting on top of you. No ranger on duty to enforce the rules. The reservation system is like the shed season and hurts the folks following the rules. Won't be back

Not a bad little place to take the grandkids fishing. A few good spots for a picnic as well
