About Teller Lake

Teller Lake sits inside the Teller Farm open space on the eastern edge of Boulder, a low-key fishing and walking destination that locals return to again and again for its easy access and surprisingly big views. The lake occupies a shallow valley surrounded by open grassland, and from its shores you can see the Continental Divide stretching across the western horizon in a panorama that visitors describe as nearly unparalleled for a Front Range trail. Sunsets here are a main attraction, with the sky lighting up over the mountains in a way that makes the short walk in feel like a much bigger adventure.

The trail to Teller Lake is flat and well-maintained, making it accessible for walkers, joggers, and families with strollers. The loop is not long — expect a round trip of about two miles from the trailhead — but the open prairie landscape and lake access make it a satisfying outing for a morning walk or an after-work wind-down. Dogs are welcome on the trail and around the lake, though the growing popularity of this spot means responsible pet ownership matters. Carry out waste bags and use the disposal stations located at both ends of the trail.

Fishing at Teller Lake attracts a small but dedicated group of anglers who work the shoreline for warm-water species. The lake holds catfish, including what regulars swear is a two-foot specimen lurking in the deeper water, along with bass and panfish. It is a great spot to introduce kids to fishing or to spend a quiet hour casting from the bank. A valid Colorado fishing license is required, and anglers should check current Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations for bag limits.

Bird watching is productive around Teller Lake and the surrounding Teller Farm open space. The mix of wetland, grassland, and riparian habitat supports a wide variety of species, including red-winged blackbirds, great blue herons, hawks, and migrating waterfowl in spring and fall. The open terrain gives you long sightlines that make spotting easier than in wooded areas.

Teller Lake gets busier with each passing year as more Boulder residents discover it, so plan for company on weekend afternoons. Early mornings and weekday evenings offer the quietest conditions and the best light for photography. The trailhead has a small parking lot that can fill up during peak hours. While the trail may lack the dramatic scenery of Boulder's mountain parks, the lake access, fishing, and those wide-open Continental Divide views make Teller Lake a rewarding destination for anyone looking for an easy outdoor outing close to town.

Very calm and seems like a hidden lake inside a valley, the sunset is gorgeous

This trail is more crowded each time I go. People please carry out your used poo bags. There are poo recycling cans at each end of the trail. Be responsible! There is no poo fairy!

Great place for a walk. Not as scenic as some of the other open space trails, but the lake access is great, and it is very convenient.

Nice fishing hole. Me and my buddy swear there is a 2 foot catfish. A monster for this tiny lake.

The views of the continental divide are almost unparalleled.
