About Woodland Lake

Woodland Lake sits in a glacially carved basin along the popular Hessie Trailhead corridor in Boulder County, offering one of the Front Range's most rewarding alpine lake hikes. The moderate trail gains steady elevation through dense subalpine forest before opening to a pristine mountain lake framed by rugged peaks. Hikers who push a short distance beyond Woodland Lake are rewarded with views of Skyscraper Reservoir, making this an ideal two-for-one outing.

The trail draws heavy foot traffic on summer weekends, so arriving early is essential to secure trailhead parking. Overflow visitors can park farther down the road and add roughly a mile to the round trip. Dogs are a common sight on the trail, though leash rules should be observed to protect the fragile alpine environment.

Woodland Lake itself is a scenic destination rather than a fishing hotspot. The crystal-clear water reflects surrounding peaks on calm mornings, and the shoreline offers flat rocks perfect for a trailside lunch. Wildflower displays along the approach trail peak in mid-July, adding splashes of columbine and Indian paintbrush to the already dramatic scenery.

Snow typically blocks access from late October through mid-June, with the prime hiking window running July through September. The elevation and exposed terrain mean afternoon thunderstorms roll in quickly, so plan to reach the lake before noon. Trail conditions can be muddy in early summer as snowfields melt, and trekking poles help on the rockier upper sections.

Whether you are chasing fall colors in September, wildflowers in July, or simply a quiet place to sit beside still water, Woodland Lake delivers a quintessential Colorado alpine experience within a manageable day hike from Boulder or Denver.

Great hike up to Woodland Lake. Also if you go a little further up the trail, you will come to Skyscraper Reservoir. You take the Hessie Trailhead. Need to get your parking early as the spots go fast, or you can add a mile or so to your hike. Lots of dogs on and off leash.
