About Silver Lake

Silver Lake sits high in Boulder County near the Continental Divide, tucked into a rugged alpine basin that draws hikers, anglers, and backcountry explorers year-round. Often visited alongside nearby St. Mary's Glacier, Silver Lake occupies a striking setting surrounded by steep rocky slopes and remnant snowfields that persist well into summer.

The approach to Silver Lake requires navigating a rough dirt road where the final mile demands four-wheel drive or high-clearance vehicles. The effort pays off with access to a genuine high-alpine environment that feels far more remote than its distance from the Denver metro would suggest. Once you reach the area, a short but steep hike leads to the lake and the glacier above.

Fishing at Silver Lake rewards patient anglers willing to make the trek. The cold, clear water holds trout, and the relative difficulty of access keeps pressure lower than more convenient Front Range fishing holes. Pack in your gear and plan to spend some time, because the setting alone is worth lingering over.

Important access note: Silver Lake falls within the Boulder watershed, and road closures or access restrictions may be in effect at various times. Always check current conditions and closures with the City of Boulder before planning a trip, as watershed protection rules can limit public entry.

The area around Silver Lake is equally popular in winter, when snowshoers and backcountry skiers use the approach to reach the glacier and surrounding ridgelines. Summer visitors should bring layers regardless of the forecast, since alpine weather shifts quickly at this elevation. The combination of glacier views, alpine fishing, and a challenging but rewarding approach makes Silver Lake one of the more memorable high-country destinations accessible from Boulder County. Allow a full day, start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, and come prepared for variable mountain conditions.

The owners are the kindest people ever. I was ill-prepared for my hike and they helped me out so much. And the lodge is an amazing and beautiful retreat. A must-stop for anyone who visits St. Mary’s glacier! (EDIT: This is referring to Silver Lake Lodge, not the lake itself)
