About Sandbeach Lake

Sandbeach Lake sits in the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mountain National Park in Boulder County, a glacially carved alpine lake reached by a roughly 4.9-mile one-way hike that gains steady elevation through subalpine forest and open meadows. The trail is well maintained and considered moderate, though the consistent uphill grade demands reasonable fitness. What waits at the end is one of the more rewarding alpine lake experiences along the Front Range: a pristine mountain lake with a sandy shoreline, cold clear water, and granite peaks rising on all sides.

The sandy beach at Sandbeach Lake gives the destination its name and its unique appeal among Colorado alpine lakes. Hikers who time their arrival for midday in summer can wade into the water or take a full cold-water plunge, though lake temperatures remain bracingly cold even in July and August. The beach area provides a natural gathering spot for lunch, rest, and photography before the return hike.

Backpackers will find designated campsites near Sandbeach Lake, making it an achievable overnight trip for those looking to spend more time in the backcountry. Be warned: winds at the campsites can pick up dramatically after dark, so stake your tent well and bring a wind-rated shelter. A backcountry camping permit from Rocky Mountain National Park is required for overnight stays.

Sandbeach Lake is one of the more popular trails in the Wild Basin corridor, especially from June through September. Expect company on summer weekends -- arrive early for trailhead parking and a quieter experience on the trail. The hike passes through forests of pine and spruce, crosses creeks, and offers periodic mountain views that build anticipation for the lake reveal at the top.

For day hikers based in Boulder, Estes Park, or the northern Front Range, Sandbeach Lake delivers a genuine alpine lake experience without requiring technical skill or extreme mileage. The round trip covers just under 10 miles with meaningful elevation gain, so bring plenty of water, layers, and sun protection.

It was a tough hike. Not for every one. 4.9 miles uphill hike. But the view was worth of every penny. you may want to plan for overnight backpack camping. I took a dip in the cold water of the lake. Loved it. My Son did that too.

It's a short and gradual hike to a beautiful place. Though it's accessibility makes it a very popular hike in the summer and can take away from a person's experience of solitude in nature. Winds at night at the campsites are truly heroic.
