About Mitchell Lake

Mitchell Lake is a pristine alpine lake at 10,700 feet in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, reached by a well-traveled trail from the Brainard Lake Recreation Area in Boulder County. Backed by the massive granite face of Mount Audubon, the lake sits just below treeline in a setting that feels far more remote than its short one-mile trail from the Mitchell Lake Trailhead would suggest. For hikers looking for a genuine high-country lake experience without a grueling approach, Mitchell Lake is one of the best options on the Front Range.

The trail from the Mitchell Lake Trailhead to the lake covers approximately one mile with a gentle uphill grade through dense subalpine forest. The path is shaded by spruce and fir trees for most of its length, keeping hikers cool even on warm summer days. About halfway along, the trail crosses a rushing mountain creek that tumbles over rocks through the forest, a spot that many visitors consider one of the highlights of the hike. The terrain is rocky in places, so sturdy hiking shoes are recommended over sandals or sneakers.

Mitchell Lake itself is a clear, shallow alpine lake where you can see the rocky bottom in most areas. The water is cold year-round, fed by snowmelt from the surrounding peaks. The shoreline can be marshy and muddy, particularly where the trail meets the lake, so expect wet feet if you venture off the main path. Mosquitoes and flies are common near the water during July and August, and insect repellent is strongly recommended.

The views from Mitchell Lake are outstanding. Mount Audubon rises directly behind the lake, and the surrounding peaks of the Indian Peaks Wilderness frame the water on multiple sides. The setting sits right at the transition between dense forest and open alpine tundra, giving the landscape a dramatic quality. Moose are spotted at the lake with some regularity, so keep your eyes open and maintain a safe distance.

Many hikers use Mitchell Lake as a rest stop on the way to Blue Lake, which lies another two miles farther along the same trail at 11,300 feet above treeline. Blue Lake requires a steeper climb with no shade and more exposure to wind, making Mitchell Lake the better turnaround point for families with young children or anyone looking for a shorter outing. Both lakes are worth visiting if you have the time and fitness.

Access to Brainard Lake Recreation Area requires a day-use reservation during peak season, typically mid-June through mid-October. Rangers check reservations at multiple points along the road. The seasonal gate closes for winter, and snow can linger on the trail into July in heavy snow years. Parking at the Mitchell Lake Trailhead is limited, and the lot fills early on summer weekends.

Dogs are allowed on the trail but must remain on leash at all times, with a reported fine of $100 for violations. The trail is dog-friendly in terms of terrain, though the rocky sections require some care. Mitchell Lake offers a rewarding alpine experience that punches well above its weight for such a short and accessible hike.

We visited Mitchell Lake during mid-day with a reservation, and the process was very organized. We were checked by three different rangers—at the entrance station, the Brainard Lake entrance, and the Mitchell Lake trailhead parking area. Parking was available, and the ranger at the lot was actively controlling traffic, which kept things smooth. **Hike:** The trail to Mitchell Lake is about 1 mile from the parking lot. It’s a slow, gradual incline but quite rocky, so good shoes are a must. The trail is shaded and well-covered by trees, making it comfortable to hike even in warmer weather. Along the way, you’ll cross a picturesque little stream, which adds to the charm. **Dogs:** This trail is dog-friendly, but pets must be on a leash at all times—there’s a $100 fine if not. **The Lake:** Once at the lake, there isn’t a designated path around it, but you can relax along the shoreline. Be aware of lots of flies and mosquitoes, especially near the muddy shore. The lake itself is gorgeous, with clear shallow water where you can see the bottom. It looks like you could walk across with water below your knees, but we didn’t attempt it. We originally planned to continue to Blue Lake, but that trail has little to no shade, and hiking in the midday sun would have been too intense. **Overall:** Mitchell Lake is a beautiful, short hike with plenty of shade and stunning views, ideal for a relaxed outing. Just bring bug spray and enjoy the peaceful setting.

I hiked to Mitchell Lake on 12/20/23. The conditions were perfect for micro spikes, and I felt that snowshoes would have been too much. The trails were easy to find and packed in well, but there were a few times the snow was a bit mushy as the day got warmer.

Halfway between Blue Lake and the Mitchell Lake Trailhead. Great place to stop for a snack and some photography.

This area is amazing! I have seen moose at this lake. One can go further if they like or just do the lake.

Beautiful hike. Mostly shaded and not too long. Great for kids. There is a beautiful rushing creek about halfway to Mitchell Lake that is just stunning. When you get to the lake itself, It's a little marshy, so expect mud and mosquitoes, but so so worth it. There is also a creak nearby. The water is ice cold and all in all is just so beautiful! We've done this hike many times and usually take friends for an easier hike with kids.

Great hike and great views. Very doable as far as the trail but the elevation and distance can be a challenge.
