About McCall Lake

McCall Lake is a popular fishing destination near Longmont in Boulder County, known for its stocked trout and occasional channel catfish. Anglers who have visited for over two decades appreciate the reliable fishing, though water levels can vary significantly — the lake is periodically drained and refilled, which affects both fishing quality and access. When conditions are right, McCall Lake delivers solid catches within easy reach of the Front Range.

The lake features a deeper dam side with a rock bed that produces the best fishing results. Stocked trout are the primary target, and most can be caught within 10 feet of shore using inline spinners or spoons. Beyond trout, anglers report catching channel catfish, carp, and bass, making McCall Lake a multi-species fishery that holds interest for different angling styles. Fishing quality does fluctuate, and some visitors report slow days, so checking recent conditions before heading out is a good idea.

McCall Lake offers designated parking as well as roadside spots, with clearly marked no-parking zones. A restroom facility and trash collection are available on site. The lake operates on a sunrise-to-sunset schedule, opening one hour before sunrise and closing one hour after sunset. There is no entry fee — a valid Colorado state fishing license is the only requirement. Ice fishing is not permitted due to unstable water levels during winter months.

The scenery around the lake is a draw in its own right. Multiple visitors highlight McCall Lake as one of the best sunset-watching spots in the Longmont area, with open views and a peaceful atmosphere. The walk from parking to the water is short, making this an accessible spot for anglers of all ages and ability levels.

Water levels are the biggest variable at McCall Lake. The lake has been drained on occasion, leaving it completely dry. When full and recently stocked, fishing can be excellent. When water is low or the lake has been drawn down, expect tougher conditions. Checking current water status before planning a trip will save disappointment.

Fishing was good, especially on the deeper dam side with the rockbed. Was able to establish my new personal record today. Has plenty of designated and roadside parking if staying away from the well marked no parking areas. There is also a restroom facility and trash collection. Open between one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset. No fee other than the usual state fishing license requirement. Was disappointed that no ice fishing is allowed due to unstable water level.
