About King Lake

King Lake lies in a deep glacial cirque just east of the Continental Divide in Boulder County, tucked inside the Indian Peaks Wilderness at roughly 11,500 feet. Fed by snowmelt and the remnants of small glaciers that cling to the surrounding peaks, the lake holds ice well into summer and offers some of the most dramatic alpine scenery accessible from the Front Range. If you have been searching for a high-country destination that combines challenging terrain with genuine wilderness solitude, King Lake delivers.

The standard approach begins at the Hessie Trailhead outside Nederland. From there the King Lake Trail follows the South Fork of Middle Boulder Creek westward through dense subalpine forest, past riparian meadows and several creek crossings, before climbing steeply into an open alpine valley. The total distance is about 5.4 miles one way with roughly 2,500 feet of elevation gain, earning the trail a strenuous rating. Plan on four to five hours for the round trip if you maintain a steady pace.

At the lake, vertical rock walls frame the water on three sides while the valley drops away to the east, giving you a sense of standing at the edge of the world. On clear days you can scramble an additional third of a mile above the lake to the Continental Divide, where views extend west toward Winter Park and the Fraser Valley. This connection to the High Lonesome Trail also opens up the popular 15-mile Devils Thumb Loop, a weekend backpacking circuit that ranks among the best overnight hikes in the Indian Peaks.

Fishing at King Lake is possible, and visitors report seeing anglers working the shoreline, though catch rates vary by season and conditions. The lake is also a starting point for peak-baggers heading up the surrounding ridgelines.

Access to the Hessie Trailhead requires navigating a dirt road that can be rough in spots. A high-clearance vehicle is helpful but not strictly necessary. Parking at Hessie fills early on summer weekends, and a shuttle or early arrival is the best strategy. No restrooms are available at the upper lot.

Weather at this elevation changes fast. Snow lingers on the upper trail through mid-July some years, and afternoon storms roll in with little warning. Pack layers, rain gear, and traction devices if visiting in early summer. The trail is also popular with trail runners, so expect company on the lower sections during peak season, though crowds thin considerably above treeline.

Beautiful lake at top of corona pass. Pretty hard to get to during winter unless u got snowmobiles. It has an amazing view of sky scraper, one of the gnarliest chutes ive ever seen. Snow sticks around years round up here if u look hard enough to find the little glaciers. Also access to the CDT.

Gorgeous. Altitude, rugged trail and elevation change make it a moderately strenuous hike. A high clearance vehicle is needed to get to the trailhead. No restroom.

07/07/2018 King Lake a great hike and it must be a great lake for fishing. I did see many guys fishing, not sure how well they did. Also many people going up and over to do the High Lonesome to Devils Thumb. Everyone up here was in a good mood due to the weather. It was great.

Pristine beauty. It's great to get up and huck it over the Continental Divide too if you are coming from the Hessie Trailhead. See out west all over to winter park. GORGEOUS.
