About Glacier Lake

Glacier Lake in Boulder County sits at high elevation west of the town of Ward in the rugged terrain of the Indian Peaks region. While the name and location suggest a classic Colorado alpine lake experience, visitors need to know upfront that Glacier Lake is surrounded by private property and is not publicly accessible. The lake is completely fenced off with posted private property signs, and there is no legal way to reach the shoreline without trespassing.

Despite the access restrictions, the area surrounding Glacier Lake is still worth knowing about for hikers who enjoy the Boulder County backcountry. The roads and trails in the vicinity offer scenic walking through beautiful mountain terrain, and visitors who have explored the perimeter report that the countryside is genuinely impressive. The landscape includes dense forest, meadows, and views of the surrounding peaks that make the drive and walk rewarding on their own terms, even without lake access.

Glacier Lake itself is reported to be deep and home to lake trout, and wildlife is abundant in the surrounding area. Bird watching and wildlife spotting along the approach roads can be productive, particularly during early morning and evening hours. The best times to visit the general area are through June and again from October onward, when temperatures are moderate and crowds are thinner.

Hikers exploring near Glacier Lake should respect all posted private property boundaries and stay on public roads and established trails. The access situation has frustrated many visitors who expected a public lake, so setting your expectations before you go will save you a wasted trip if your goal is fishing or spending time at the water.

For those specifically looking for accessible alpine lakes in Boulder County, nearby alternatives in the Indian Peaks Wilderness and Roosevelt National Forest offer similar scenery with legitimate public access. Brainard Lake Recreation Area, Long Lake, and Lake Isabelle are all within a reasonable drive and provide the alpine lake experience that Glacier Lake's private status prevents.

Another lame example of Colorados for purchase areas privatized and taken from the public.

Well, we walked the roads all around this lake and it’s completely fenced off with “Private Property” signs. Could not get in anywhere without trespassing. 3 stars because the hike around the area is still super nice!
