About Barker Reservoir

Barker Reservoir, also known as Barker Meadow Reservoir or Nederland Lake, rests at roughly 8,200 feet in the Front Range foothills just 1.5 miles from the mountain town of Nederland. Owned and operated by the City of Boulder as a municipal water supply, the reservoir enforces strict no-boating, no-swimming, and no-wading rules, but it remains one of Boulder County's most scenic shoreline fishing destinations.

Anglers work the north and west shorelines for an unusually diverse cold-water fishery that includes rainbow trout, brown trout, splake, kokanee salmon, and Arctic grayling. The mix of species and the high-altitude setting make Barker a draw for fly fishers and spin casters alike. A valid Colorado fishing license is required, and anglers should check current CPW regulations for bag and size limits.

A dirt trail follows much of the reservoir's perimeter, offering a peaceful walk with views of the Continental Divide and surrounding pine-covered ridges. The trail is mostly flat and suitable for all ages, making it a rewarding leg-stretch for families passing through Nederland on their way to the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway.

Primitive restrooms are available near the parking area, but the site has no other developed amenities. Pack your own food and water, and carry out everything you bring in. The reservoir fills reliably during spring runoff, and visitors note that the water level stays high through most of the summer.

Barker Reservoir is best appreciated for its mountain scenery and accessible shoreline fishing rather than water-based recreation. The lack of motorized boats keeps the water glass-calm, and the moderate trail around the lake provides a quiet counterpoint to busier Front Range destinations. Stop in Nederland afterward for coffee, food, and a stroll through the quirky shops along East First Street.

The views are ruined by expensive multimillion dollar cardboard boxes overlooking the water. Instead of looking at trees your are looking at the roofs of very ugly multimillion dollar homes. Seeing that modern cardboard American garbage with zero architectural prowess instead of the natural landscape above the water is utterly revolting and makes me want to vomit.
